Context last updated 23 Sep 2026, 09:33 · Europe/Bucharest

Han Shi's hard-court form meets home seed Ayla Aksu in Ankara, with a quarterfinal place on the line.

Shi has won 11 of her last 15 completed hard-court matches and 25 of 35 sets, and she is the more likely winner here. The quoted prices — Shi to win at 1.55, Shi in straight sets at 2.2 and the match finishing in two sets at 1.45 — ask for more than that form justifies, so none is worth taking.

Context

Aksu is competing in her home city with Turkish players filling the centre court, which is an environment factor around this round of 16 rather than a measured playing advantage. Nothing in the reporting describes how the crowd or the venue changed either player's level in this draw. It is also a single home week, so there is no body of home results behind it. Han Shi has no equivalent local presence at this venue, but no evidence suggests that will decide the match.
- Aksu is seeded ninth at the Ankara Open.
- Aksu is among several Turkish players in the main draw of the home WTA 125 event.
- Four Turkish players won centre-court matches on the opening day of the main draw.
- Aksu met tennis followers in Ankara, before her opening match.

This is what turns the round of 16 into a step up rather than a routine week for the home player: she is competing at a WTA 125 at the highest ranking of her career, having spent the season moving up rather than holding a level. US Open qualifying in late August is the strongest test in that stretch and came within a month of this event. The limitation is that the peak covers one week and her ranking now sits at No. 216, so the upward movement is real but shallow.
- Aksu's career high of No. 198 was set on 27 July 2026, up from No. 305 in February 2026.
- Aksu played US Open qualifying in late August 2026.
- Aksu discussed her career-high ranking and US Open qualifying in a tennis interview published .

Shi's fast starts have been the most reliable part of her hard-court run this season.
Winning the opener 12 times in 15 matches is why she is the player expected to lead first here; the caveat is a 15-match sample from one surface, and three of those opening sets went the other way, so the first set stays a strong lean rather than a certainty.
- First-set record of 12 wins and 3 losses across 15 completed hard-court matches, 17 July to 22 September 2026.
- Averages 5.8 games won and 3.4 games lost per first set, with two tiebreaks in those 15 first sets.
Shi's recent record is strong, but she has not been immune to lower-ranked opponents.
The 17 September loss shows Shi can be beaten by an opponent ranked well below her, which matters against an Aksu side ranked 26 places above her; the counterweight is that it stands alone among her recent results.
- Shi lost 7-5, 3-6, 4-6 (14-17 games) to an opponent ranked 455 on 17 September 2026 in a completed indoor hard-court match.
