Context last updated 23 Sep 2026, 09:27 · Europe/Bucharest

Two Turkish players meet in the second round in Ankara, with No.

307 Berfu Cengiz against No. 867 Aysegul Mert, who is playing for a first WTA 125 quarter-final after her first WTA-level win. Cengiz is the likelier winner, having beaten a top-200 opponent in straight sets here this week, but 1.30 for her is not worth taking. Mert at 3.50 is the one price that offers something.

Context

Cengiz spent almost all of her 2026 singles season on clay, so a straight-set win over an opponent inside the top 200 is her single hard-court reference of the year and it came on the court hosting this match. Her own account highlights the opponent's hard-court quality and a home crowd, which describes the conditions she carries into this round. The limit is that one match against a higher-ranked opponent establishes she can win at this level rather than that the surface favours her.
- Cengiz defeated Martyna Kubka 6-2, 6-4 at the Ankara WTA 125 and advanced to the second round.
- Cengiz said the match was very difficult, that her opponent is a very good hard-court player, that she thought she played well, and that the atmosphere was excellent.

Mert is ranked No. 867 and had no tour singles match since early June, so this result is the first read on her level since her season resumed. She dropped the opening set to Shinikova before controlling the match, which shows she can hold a three-set standard at this tier rather than produce only a fast start. The counterpoint is that the win came against an opponent outside the top 350, so it marks a career milestone more than a level clearly above her ranking.
- Mert defeated Isabella Shinikova 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 at the Ankara WTA 125.
- The win was published on the same day as the first WTA-level victory of her career, with her place in the second round confirmed.

This is a meeting between two home players at a WTA 125 staged in Ankara, and the crowd is part of the conditions: Cengiz pointed to the atmosphere after her opening win. Türkiye has several players in this main draw, which lifts local interest in a meeting between two of them beyond what the ranking level alone would draw. The winner moves into the quarter-finals.
- Cengiz's win was reported as reaching the last 16, and the crowd atmosphere was described by the player herself as excellent.
- Turkish players in the Ankara main draw in September 2026 included Cengiz, Mert, Ayla Aksu and qualifier İlay Yörük.

Two consecutive weeks of WTA-level women's tennis in Türkiye, with domestic television coverage, explain why early rounds here draw more national attention than the ranking level suggests. The field is a full main draw drawn from about 20 countries, so this second-round match sits inside a normal professional tournament. Both players opened their weeks at this venue, Mert and Cengiz on 22 September, so neither arrives from another site.
- The Ankara event is listed as running 21-27 September 2026 at Topspin Bilkent in Ankara, with its opening press conference reporting about 50 players from 20 countries.
- The ATİK Antalya Open WTA 125 was held in Antalya for the first time from 7 to 13 September 2026.
