Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 18 Sep 2026, 09:22 · Europe/Bucharest

Rodionov's superior serve and clay form make him a medium-confidence favorite over Onclin; best bets are Rodionov moneyline, under 12.5 aces, and over 4.5 double faults.

Avoid Rodionov -3.5 as Onclin keeps clay margins tight, and set-based markets offer only low-confidence edges.

Context

Rodionov, No. 142, is the left-hander in this matchup and the higher-ranked of the two; Onclin, No. 164, is 22 places behind and works with coach Steve Darcis.
Across the last 15 tracked matches Rodionov is 10-5 and Onclin 8-7, but the level of opposition separates them: Rodionov beat Fearnley (No. 97) and Mpetshi Perricard (No. 106) in late August before losing to Mensik (No. 15), while Onclin's recent run includes a 6-4 6-2 loss to Perot (No. 295) and a straight-sets exit against Sachko (No. 182). The caveat is surface, as almost all of Rodionov's recent block came on hard courts.
- Last 15 matches: Rodionov 10-5 (66.7%) with 23 of 36 sets won; Onclin 8-7 (53.3%) with 19 of 38 sets won.
- Rodionov's late-August run included wins over Fearnley (No. 97) and Mpetshi Perricard (No. 106) before a four-set loss to Mensik (No. 15).
- Onclin lost 6-4 6-2 to Perot (No. 295) on 8 September and went out 7-5 7-5 to Sachko (No. 182) in late August.
- Rodionov's 15-match window is 8 hard-court and 7 clay matches, so the overall record mixes two different surfaces.
Onclin, 24, is the right-hander with a two-handed backhand ranked No. 164, and he is Belgium's No. 2 singles player in this tie. He steps into the opening rubber for his first Davis Cup match after Raphaël Collignon's knee problem changed the selection.
A first Davis Cup appearance in the first match of the tie leaves his level in this format genuinely unknown, and his recent tracked sample of two wins from five matches does not settle it. The match read stays with Rodionov on the serve and return numbers rather than leaning on the occasion itself.
- Onclin is scheduled to face Rodionov as Belgium's No. 2 singles player in his first Davis Cup match.
- Stored recent sample: 2 wins from 5 tracked matches.

Rodionov, 191cm and left-handed, leans on his serve and averaged 7.2 aces per match over the last 15. Onclin, 180cm, averaged 1.8 aces and more double faults (3.2 per match) in the same window.
The clearest numeric split sits behind the first serve and on break points faced: Rodionov wins 73.3% of first-serve points and saves 69.8% of break points, against Onclin's 67% and 54.2%. On the seven clay matches each has played recently those break-point figures converge (Rodionov 60%, Onclin 61.7%), and Onclin's return points won are marginally higher, so the serving edge is most likely to show on first-strike points rather than in long pressure games.
- Last 15 matches: Rodionov 73.3% first-serve points won (451/615), Onclin 67% (426/636).
- Break points saved: Rodionov 69.8% (67/96), Onclin 54.2% (52/96).
- Aces per match: Rodionov 7.2 across all 15 tracked matches, Onclin 1.8 across 14 tracked matches; double faults per match 2.6 vs 3.2.
- On the recent clay subsets the break-point numbers nearly level: Rodionov 60% (18/30), Onclin 61.7% (29/47), and Onclin's return points won on clay are slightly higher (41.8% to 41%).
Rodionov and Onclin open the Austria–Belgium tie on 18 September at Wiener Athletic Club, played outdoors on clay, with the winning nation reaching November's Final 8 in Bologna.
Both players get the same outdoor clay and the same stake, so this sets the conditions of the match rather than separating them. The opening-rubber slot means one of them must deliver the first point of the tie, and best-of-three leaves little room to work into the match.
- The order of play lists Rodionov–Onclin as Friday's first singles match before Neumayer–Bergs.

Serve/return structural edge (much bigger hold and ace profile) plus clay surface fit and a straight-set H2H win favor Rodionov, with Onclin's high clay double-fault rate adding break chances.
- Rodionov last-15: 10-15 (66.7% wins), 5-2 on clay (71.4%); Onclin last-15: 8-15 (53.3%), 4-3 on clay (57.1%)
- Serve edge last-15: Rodionov 7.2 aces/match and 73.3% first-serve points won (61% serve-in career) vs Onclin 1.8 aces/match at 67.0%
- H2H 2026-03-13: Rodionov won 6-4 6-2 with 10 aces to 4; Onclin converted 1 of 4 break points (25%)
- Onclin 3.2 double faults/match last-15 (4.3 on clay), feeding Rodionov's 38.4% return-points-won window

Recent form and match-format dynamics point to long games: Onclin's grinder profile frequently forces three-set, tiebreak-filled matches while clay blunts the serve-dominant quick finishes.
- Onclin last-15 average match duration 124.1 minutes vs Rodionov 106.2 minutes
- Onclin went to a deciding set in 9 of his last 15 matches (60%), including several 7-6/6-7 clay sets
- Rodionov break-points-saved 69.8% and Onclin 54.2% in last-15 means extended, break-heavy games on clay

Signal quality Low · Uncertainty band Slight lean · Not priced
The read
Even with Rodionov favored, Onclin's return quality (41.8% return points on clay last-15) and history of long matches make a 3.5-game cushion low-risk, though this is only a modest edge.
- Match winner leans Rodionov at ~63%, leaving ~37% of scenarios where Onclin wins outright and the handicap is safe
- In Rodionov's clay last-15 wins scores were often 6-4/6-2 style, leaving room for a narrow 2-1 or tight 2-0
- Onclin career deciding-set win pct 60% and comeback rate 22% show he keeps margins close

The read
Rodionov's superior clay hold numbers and lefty serve give him the serve/return structural edge to take the opening set, though Onclin's return quality keeps it from being a high-confidence read.
- Rodionov 75.3% first-serve points won on clay over last 15 (7 clay matches tracked)
- Rodionov clay last-15 games won 56.3% vs Onclin 55.0%, but Rodionov won 5 of 7 clay matches
- Onclin opened recent clay sets with slow starts (e.g. 6-2 and 6-2 first-set losses to Dedura and Ajdukovic in July 2026)
BetBugs · Set 1 WinnerwonJurij RodionovEstimated chance58%
Signal quality Low · Uncertainty band Slight lean · Not priced
The read
Same serve/return structural edge carries into set two, but Onclin's clay resilience (57.9% sets won recently) makes this a softer, lower-confidence call.
- Rodionov clay last-15: 75.3% first-serve points won and 53.1% second-serve points won
- Rodionov career deciding-set win pct 52% and first-set-win conversion 83% show he sustains leads
- Onclin clay sets won 57.9% (11 of 19) in last-15 window, so he fights back in second sets
BetBugs · Set 2 WinnerwonJurij RodionovEstimated chance55%
Signal quality Low · Uncertainty band Slight lean · Not priced
The read
Rodionov's tendency to close clay matches in straight sets slightly outweighs Onclin's three-set habit, making a sub-2.5-set match a marginal lean.
- Rodionov's Bo3 matches in last-15 went to a third set only 4 of 14 times (~29%)
- Onclin's last-15 featured 9 of 15 three-set matches (60%), pulling the blend toward a coin flip
- Rodionov clay sets-won 71.4% versus Onclin's 57.9% points to quicker closings by the favorite

Signal quality Medium · Uncertainty band Lean · Not priced
The read
Both players' serve-profile numbers, especially Onclin's elevated clay double-fault rate, project a combined count well above the 4.5 line.
- Rodionov 2.6 double faults/match last-15; Onclin 3.2/match overall
- Onclin's clay split shows 4.3 double faults/match across 7 tracked clay matches
- H2H 2026-03-13: Onclin double-faulted 3 times in a straight-set loss, versus Rodionov's 1
BetBugs · Total Double Faultsnot gradableOver 4.5Estimated chance64%
Signal quality Medium · Uncertainty band Lean · Not priced
The read
Serve-profile data shows Onclin almost never aces and neither player's ace rate rises on clay, so the combined total should sit near 9-10, comfortably under the line.
- Overt combined ace rate last-15: Rodionov 7.2/match vs Onclin just 1.8/match
- On clay only, Rodionov 7.1 and Onclin 1.7 aces/match in their tracked surface splits
- Clay is the tournament surface (outdoor Vienna), which suppresses ace counts further
BetBugs · Total Acesnot gradableUnder 12.5Estimated chance60%
Signal quality Low · Uncertainty band Slight lean · Not priced
The read
Both players hold serve well enough in clusters to push at least one set to a tiebreak, but clay's lower ace rate keeps this only a coin-flip lean.
- Onclin's recent clay run produced tiebreaks in 4 of 7 tracked clay matches (e.g. 7-6(13), 6-7(5))
- Rodionov career tiebreak win pct 55% and Onclin 53% suggest close service exchanges
- Rodionov's 73.3% first-serve points won and Onclin's return strength create hold-heavy patches
