Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 12 May 2026, 21:03 · Europe/Bucharest

Hibino's vast clay experience and superior return game should overwhelm Tomase, who has a thin clay resume and a high double-fault rate.

The best value lies in Hibino winning the first set (edge 13.5pts) and covering a -4.5 game handicap (edge 3.2pts), with a straight-sets victory likely. Avoid total games markets where the offered line doesn't match the model's projection.

Context

Tomase is 3-4 on clay in her career, with all 2026 matches before Zagreb coming on hard courts.
- Her 2026 record is 3-1, but none of those wins were on clay.
- Hibino has a 55-48 career clay record and has played 103 clay matches, giving her a massive experience edge.
Tomase's double-fault rate is 9.7%, nearly double the typical rate for a professional.
- She wins only 42.2% of points on her second serve.
- Hibino wins 45% of return points and converts 47.7% of break points, so she can exploit Tomase's weak serve.

- She lost 6-1 6-2 to Mananchaya Sawangkaew (No. 175) on 23 April.
- She lost 6-4 6-3 to Alexandra Shubladze (No. 205) on 1 April.
- Her only clay win in this stretch was against Reina Goto (No. 566).

The read
Hibino's vast experience advantage on clay and superior level of competition in recent matches give her a decisive edge, while Tomase's high double-fault rate and thin clay resume make an upset unlikely.
- Hibino has a career 55-48 clay record with extensive experience, while Tomase is 3-4 on clay with only 7 career matches on the surface.
- Hibino's recent form includes wins over players ranked 310, 350, 566, and 613, while Tomase's wins have come against unranked or lower-tier opponents.
- Hibino's first-serve win rate (60.6%) and return points won (45%) are superior to Tomase's (64.3% and 47%), but Tomase's stats are based on a small sample against weaker competition.
- Tomase has a 9.7% double-fault rate, which is a significant liability on clay where points are extended.

- Hibino has won the first set in 10 of her last 15 matches, including against players ranked higher than Tomase.
- Tomase has lost the first set in 4 of her last 5 matches, often by wide margins (6-1, 6-2, 6-2).

Assuming Hibino wins the first set, her high first-set conversion rate and Tomase's difficulty in mounting comebacks make Hibino likely to also take the second set.
- Hibino has won the second set in 9 of her last 15 matches, including all matches where she won the first set.
- Tomase has lost the second set in 4 of her last 5 losses, often by scores like 6-3 or 6-4.
- Hibino's deciding-set win rate of 56% suggests she can close out matches, but her first-set conversion rate of 86% indicates she rarely needs a third set.

- Hibino has won 8 of her last 15 matches in straight sets, including dominant wins over lower-ranked opponents.
- Tomase has lost 5 of her last 7 matches in straight sets, often struggling to win more than 4 games per set against opponents ranked outside the top 300.

- Hibino has played only 2 three-set matches in her last 15, winning both.
- Tomase has played 4 three-set matches in her last 15, but all were against opponents ranked outside the top 300.

Given the expected one-sided nature of the match, a tiebreak is unlikely, as Hibino should win sets comfortably without needing a tiebreak.
- Hibino has played only 2 tiebreaks in her last 15 matches, winning both.
- Tomase has played 3 tiebreaks in her last 15 matches, but all were against lower-ranked opponents.
- Hibino's career tiebreak win rate is 57%, but her matches against weaker opponents rarely reach tiebreaks.

Both players have low ace rates, and clay courts diminish the effectiveness of big serves, making under 4.5 aces probable.
- Hibino averages 2.6 aces per 100 service points, resulting in roughly 1-2 aces per match.
- Tomase averages 4.4 aces per 100 service points, but her low first-serve percentage (54.3%) limits her ace opportunities.
- Combined, their ace rates suggest a total around 3-4 in a typical match, with clay further reducing ace counts.

The read
Tomase's high double-fault rate is the primary driver, and even a modest contribution from Hibino could push the total over 7.5, though the low confidence reflects uncertainty in exact count.
- Tomase averages 9.7 double faults per 100 service points, which translates to roughly 4-5 double faults per match in a typical two-setter.
- Hibino averages 4.1 double faults per 100 service points, contributing another 2-3 per match.
- Combined, their double-fault rates suggest a total around 7-8 in a straight-sets match, with potential for more if the match extends.
