Context last updated 26 Oct 2026, 03:33 · Europe/Bucharest

Two hard-court records almost level on points won — Valentova 51.9%, Pohankova 52.6% — make this a closer first round than the 88-versus-145 ranking suggests.

Valentova's wins over Shuai Zhang in Tokyo give her the slight edge in ordinary terms. One quoted price holds up: Pohankova to win at 2.75; Valentova at 1.44 asks for 69.4% and offers nothing.

Context

Pohankova is the lower-ranked player at No. 145 but has the better hard-court game share in this window.
Her first sets in the same sample are 8-5 with 4.77 games won to 4.38 lost, so the second set is where she separates. Seven of her nine hard-court wins in this window came in straight sets. Thirteen matches is a small base for a split this lopsided, so it reads as a lean rather than a fixed pattern.
- Second sets: 10 wins, 3 losses across 13 hard-court matches, 23 August to 15 October 2026
- Second-set games: 5.69 won against 4.00 lost
- First sets in the same 13 matches: 8-5, with 4.77 games won to 4.38 lost
The fixture is listed for Tuesday, 27 October in Tokyo. That establishes the immediate tournament setting and expected playing window for this meeting. The stated 12:30pm AEDT start is approximate, so it does not establish an exact court assignment or local start time.
- The fixture is listed for Tuesday, 27 October 2026, with an approximate 12:30pm AEDT start.

Valentova is the higher-ranked player at No. 88 and concedes serve points through errors more than she wins them outright.
The count is 64 double faults against 36 aces in 15 completed hard-court matches between 22 July and 25 October 2026. She still won 51.9% of total points and went 10-5 in that window, so the errors have not wrecked her results. In a match separated by less than a percentage point of points won, free points on serve carry a real cost.
- 64 double faults across 15 hard-court matches (4.3 per match) between 22 July and 25 October 2026
- 36 aces in the same 15-match sample (2.4 per match)
- 10-5 record with 51.9% of total points won in that window
The 25 October result is the most recent completed match on either side of this first-round meeting.
She took 13 games to 7 in that match and dropped only five games in the second set. It was her fourth win in six completed matches and her second over a top-100 opponent in the same week. Both wins came on hard courts, the surface in use here, though the sample is a handful of matches rather than a sustained run.
- Beat Shuai Zhang (ranked 85) 7-5 6-2 on 25 October 2026
- 13 games won to 7 lost in that match
- Fourth win in six completed matches at the time of the sample
