Raul Brancaccio #231Italy22 – 0Calvin Hemery #309France0

The Kigali title is the most recent evidence that Hemery's clay game is producing titles, and it sits alongside a Brazzaville Challenger title earlier in 2026: two clay titles in one season for a player ranked No. 309. It matters here because Brancaccio has lost ten of his last fifteen matches, so current form runs against the 78-place ranking gap that favours Brancaccio. The limitation is level: the best-ranked opponent Hemery beat in Kigali was No. 302, in an M25 event below this 75-level Challenger, so the run does not by itself establish an edge over a top-250 opponent on a bigger court.

A straight-sets loss to a player outside the top 750 is the sharpest current signal on Brancaccio, who went to Maia as the world No. 231 and never won more than three games in a set. It matters because Hemery has won seven of his last eight matches on clay, so recent results and the ranking gap point in opposite directions. The counterpoint is that Brancaccio beat No. 144 Pablo Llamas Ruiz 5-7 6-3 6-3 in September, so the level that produced a top-150 win this season is recent rather than absent, and a single 6-3 6-1 defeat against a qualifier carries limited weight on its own.

Hemery's preparation is the more disruptive of the two routes: ten days of competition in Rwanda followed by a long trip to Portugal, against an opponent who moved within the same country from Maia to Lisbon. That combination of match load and travel is the kind of condition that surfaces in a first round on clay, where longer exchanges reward freshness. The limitation is that five clear days separate Hemery's last Kigali match from this first round, and nothing in the record shows a retirement, medical timeout or withdrawal, so this is a workload question rather than a fitness one.

The one prior meeting was close enough that it says more about the margins of this matchup than about any advantage: a single set separated by a tiebreak, on the same surface, eight months ago. It matters as the only direct evidence of how the two clay games interact, and it went Brancaccio's way even though Hemery holds the higher career-high ranking at No. 116. The limitation is that a single early-season match against a similarly ranked opponent cannot predict a 75-level first round eight months later, and both men's results have changed substantially since.
