Context last updated 19 Oct 2026, 15:24 · Europe/Bucharest

A seed who has lost six straight against a qualifier on his third day of tennis: Broady is 1-9 on hard courts since late June, while Palan has won twice this week.

Palan looks the likelier winner, and 3.8 is the one price worth taking; Broady at 1.22 asks far more than his form allows.

Context

The timeout came in the second set of the qualifying match, before Palan turned a set deficit into a 6-7(6) 7-6(2) 6-4 win, and he then played and won again on 19 October. Nothing in that record shows a retirement or withdrawal, and no treatment area was named, so the physical question stays open rather than resolved. For this fixture it is the one live uncertainty around a 191cm server whose second serve and movement would be exposed first in the quick Nansha conditions against Broady's left-handed delivery. The limit on the evidence is that he won both the match in which the timeout occurred and the one after it, so this reads as a factor to watch rather than an established restriction.
- A medical timeout was called for Palan at 2-3 in the second set, with Weber due to serve next.
- The nature of the treatment was not specified.
- Palan completed a 6-7(6) 7-6(2) 6-4 win over Arthur Weber .
- Palan returned on 19 October and beat Semen Pankin 6-4 6-2.

An ace rate of 12.7% through 18 qualifying matches, against a 6.6% outdoor hard-court average for the season, points to conditions where serve and first-strike patterns decide more points than baseline exchange. That matters here because Broady's left-handed serve and the 191cm Palan's delivery are the two most direct routes to cheap points in this matchup, and short rallies reduce the number of neutral points either man has to construct. The limitation is scope: the rating is built from only the qualifying rounds of one week, so it records how the courts have played so far rather than a settled tournament-wide figure, and the sample is small in absolute terms.
- Ace rate of 12.7% through 18 qualifying matches at the Guangzhou Nansha Challenger.
- Outdoor hard-court qualifying average for 2026 is 6.6%.
- Speed rating of 108.2, ahead of Dubai at 107.9 and Chengdu at 107.3.
- Figures are based on qualifying matches played before the main draw.
ReportedSources checked 19 Oct 2026, 15:23 · Europe/Bucharest
Palan has already spent two days on court in Guangzhou, including a three-set win with two tiebreaks on 18 October, and this match is scheduled third in the order of play on Court 5. Broady's last competitive outing was the first-round loss at Roanne, so the eight-day gap gives him the fresher legs but no recent match rhythm on these courts. The contrast is asymmetric in the usual direction only up to a point: Palan's additional workload is two matches rather than a deep run, and a third-slot start gives him a later court call rather than a short overnight turnaround. Match sharpness and recovery therefore pull in opposite directions for the two men, which is more useful for reading the first set than either player's season record.
- Palan played and won on both 18 and in Guangzhou qualifying.
- The 18 October win over Weber ran to three sets, including two tiebreaks.
- Palan's previous consecutive wins came on 20 and 21 July.
- Broady lost 6-4 6-4 at Roanne and had not played since.

One win in ten hard-court matches and only six sets won from 24 is the record Broady carries into a first round he enters as eighth seed. Palan's own 5-10 hard-court mark is modest, so the gap is smaller than a ranking difference of roughly 390 places suggests. Broady's season form, not his seeding, describes what to expect.
- Hard-court record of 1-9 across 10 tracked matches, 29 June to 12 October 2026.
- Scorelines in that sample: five 0-2 defeats, four 1-2 defeats, one 2-0 win.
- Six sets won from 24 played (25%) in those ten matches.
- 47.8% of total points won (770 of 1,612) across the same ten matches.
