Hanyu Guo #240China00 – 2Ekaterina Alexandrova #24Russia2

Guo's Wuhan fortnight is the most direct evidence of her level on the same Chinese hard-court swing, and it ended four days before this match. Coming from a set down and saving three match points against the No. 16 seed Sorana Cirstea, then winning a third-set tiebreak against Katie Volynets, shows she can close out tour-level opponents rather than only compete with them. The limit is that Elina Svitolina then beat her 6-1 6-4 in the round of 16, so her two wins came against a No. 16 seed and a No. 88 rather than top-10 opposition. Against the No. 24 seed here the step up is real but modest, which is why a No. 240 ranking understates her likely competitiveness.

The Wuhan first round was Alexandrova's only completed match in the week before this opener, and she lost it in three sets to an opponent she had beaten three times in a row. The 47 unforced errors point to a level below her best and give no recent evidence of the form that took her to the Beijing quarterfinals earlier in the swing. A No. 24 seed losing her opening match at a WTA 1000 event is the kind of result that makes a first-round meeting with an in-form home wildcard less straightforward than the 216-place ranking gap implies. It does not indicate a physical problem: the record shows a match lost on error count, with no retirement or medical stoppage.

The six-match sample runs from 1 August to 15 October 2026, and Guo lost the first set in five of those matches. She did recover from a 1-6 first set to beat Sorana Cirstea in Wuhan, so the pattern is not decisive. Against Alexandrova, who has won 8 of 15 opening sets on hard, the first set is likely to shape the match.
