Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 06:11 · Europe/Bucharest

A 303-versus-896 ranking gap says Fajing Sun should win; the recent hard-court records say otherwise, with Qian Sun 7-8 against Fajing's 6-8.

Fajing is still the likelier winner, but Qian's 10-5 second-set record keeps him live. Three prices hold up: Qian Sun to win the match at 6.5, and to take either the first or second set at 4.25.

Context

Two in-match stoppages inside a month, the later one explicitly for the lower back, coincide with straight-set defeats in his last two matches and sit directly before this opening round. Back trouble of that kind typically shows in serve rhythm and first-step movement rather than in shot selection, which matters against a lower-ranked opponent he is expected to control from the baseline. He is entered for singles and doubles this week and has completed both matches since the treatment, so nothing points to an enforced absence. Whether the problem recurs across a week that could include doubles with Hsiou Hsu is unresolved.
- Medical timeout called for treatment on the lower back during the second set against Alibek Kachmazov at the Wuning 3 Challenger .
- Sun lost that quarterfinal 6-3 6-4, then lost his Jinan first round 6-3 7-5 to Jie Cui as a wild-card entrant.
- A separate medical timeout, treatment not visible, came while Sun trailed Bernard Tomic 3-4 in the second set in Hangzhou .
- Sun appears on the Guangzhou Nansha entry list published 14 October 2026 in both singles and doubles, with no withdrawal, walkover or retirement since.

Qian Sun tends to hand over the first set before finding his game.
He averaged 4.4 games won against 5.7 lost in first sets, then 5.4 won against 4.3 lost in second sets. Nine of the 15 matches went to a deciding set, so the slow start rarely ended his day. That makes the opener the phase Fajing Sun is best placed to take and the second set the one Qian has repeatedly rescued. Seven of the 15 matches included a tiebreak in a small sample.
- Opening sets: 3 wins, 12 losses across 15 hard-court matches, 6 August to 11 October 2026.
- Second sets: 10 wins, 5 losses in the same 15 matches.
- Scorelines: five 2-1 wins, four 1-2 losses, two 2-0 wins and four 0-2 losses; seven matches with a tiebreak.
Seven quarterfinals is the clearest public measure of Sun's 2026 level on hard courts and explains why he is ranked far above his opponent here. The two defeats that followed leave him arriving without a win since, and both were settled in straight sets, so the ranking gap is not the same thing as current form. He has played in three different Chinese host cities inside ten days, which is a modest but real difference from an opponent whose last match was on 11 October.
- Sun beat Kasidit Samrej 6-4 7-5 to reach his seventh quarterfinal of the year at the Wuning 3 Challenger.
- He lost the quarterfinal 6-3 6-4 to Alibek Kachmazov on 9 October and lost 6-3 7-5 to Jie Cui in Jinan .
- Sun reached a career-high ranking of No. 197 in May 2026 and is currently No. 303.

Having already played a Challenger in Guangzhou this season gives Sun recent local hard-court reference points, including a three-set win and a three-set loss that both went the distance. The September event was a 100-level tournament rather than this 75-level one at Nansha, so the comparison is to the city and conditions rather than the same draw. It also means his 2026 hard-court record on Chinese courts includes five consecutive two- and three-set matches in this region.
- Sun was competing at the Guangzhou Challenger in the week of 15 September 2026.
- He beat Alexis Galarneau 7-5 3-6 7-5 on 15 September 2026 and lost 4-6 7-6(4) 6-4 to Alexandr Binda on 17 September 2026.
- The September event in Guangzhou was a higher-tier ATP 100 Challenger, while this week's event at Nansha is a 75-level tournament.
