Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 22:49 · Europe/Bucharest

A 39-year-old wildcard in the final tournament of his career meets a qualifier who has won twice this week without dropping a set.

Sakellaridis, ranked 223 places higher, has two completed matches behind him; Kukushkin has not competed since June. At 1.45 Sakellaridis is too short, and 1.50 for the first set or 2.05 for a 2-0 win offer no clear advantage either.

Context

Kukushkin is ranked No. 358 and has not played a competitive match since June, so this first round is his first tournament tennis in four months. A wildcard places a 39-year-old whose career-high was No. 39, and who owns four Top 10 wins, into a main draw on home ground, making the occasion itself the dominant story. The form counterweight is specific: one win in his last six matches, that against a player ranked No. 803, and straight-set defeats in both of his June grass-court outings. What the layoff leaves unknown is his level over three sets, which matters against an opponent who has already played twice this week.
- Kukushkin, 39, entered the Almaty Open main draw on a wildcard and is ranked No. 358.
- His previous event was the Mallorca Championships in June 2026, where he failed to qualify.
- He reached a career-high No. 39 and recorded four Top 10 wins.
- The first round against Sakellaridis is scheduled as the last singles match of Monday's play on Center Court.

Two completed matches on the Almaty indoor court give Sakellaridis match rhythm that Kukushkin cannot have, and the second of them came against a top-120 opponent. Beating Shevchenko 7-6(4), 6-4 is the clearest measure of his week's level, since Shevchenko was the third seed in qualifying and ranked No. 111. The cost is timing: the Greek played on 17 and and returns on 19 October, his third successive day of competition. Qualifying also gave him two match days to read the court's bounce before a first round in which his opponent has none.
- Sakellaridis defeated Bar Biryukov 6-2, 6-3 in the qualifying first round on 17 October.
- He defeated Shevchenko 7-6(4), 6-4 in the qualifying final to enter the main draw.
- Shevchenko was the third seed in qualifying and is ranked No. 111; Sakellaridis was the sixth seed.

Kukushkin won one of eight first sets on hard courts between 18 February and 6 May 2026, averaging 3.75 games in the opening set. Sakellaridis has won four of nine first sets in his own hard-court sample and took the opener in both qualifying wins. A slow start would leave the home player chasing a match he has barely played this year.
- Eight completed hard-court matches, 18 February to 6 May 2026: one first set won, seven lost, 3.75 games won per first set.
- Those eight matches included two first-set tiebreaks.
Sakellaridis arrives with a 2026 record that includes two Challenger titles and a first tour-level win, which is why he was seeded in Almaty qualifying rather than needing a wildcard. The ranking gap of 223 places separates a player on an upward season from one playing a farewell event. Almost all of that record was built at Challenger level, so a first-round ATP 250 win over a player outside the top 300 would not by itself establish him at tour level. It does explain why he is the higher-ranked player in this first round despite coming through qualifying.
- Sakellaridis won two Challenger titles during the 2026 season.
- He beat Jan Choinski in the first round in Bucharest for a tour-level win.
- He is ranked No. 135; Kukushkin is No. 358.
