Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 03:39 · Europe/Bucharest

Janice Tjen is seeded sixth and ranked higher, but Ashlyn Krueger beat her 6-2 6-1 in their only meeting and won her lone WTA title on these Osaka courts.

Tjen's serve makes her a narrow favourite, with Krueger's recent Wuhan run keeping the match close. At 1.95, Tjen is the one quoted price worth taking; Krueger at 1.85 does not offer enough.

Context

The 2023 title is the only week in her career in which she converted a tour-level draw into a trophy, and it came on the same Utsubo hard courts used this week, so she arrives knowing the venue, the bounce and the schedule. That is the clearest evidence beyond rankings that these conditions suit her, and it gives the first round a stake the seedings do not capture. The counterweight is time: she is 22 now, ranked 68 and unseeded, 21 places below Tjen, so 2023 establishes fit with the venue rather than current level.
- Krueger won her first career singles title in Osaka in 2023, defeating top seed Zhu Lin in the final without dropping a set
- She has one career WTA singles title as of October 2026
- She practised in Osaka, the day the main draw was made
- She is unseeded here at No. 68, three years after that title

Three main-draw wins at WTA 1000 level, the deepest she has gone at that tier since Miami in 2025, came immediately after she had been knocked out of qualifying, so the week describes a player whose hard-court level sits above her No. 68 ranking. The Tararudee match is the informative part: she lost the opening set 2-6 and finished 6-1 6-1, the kind of in-match correction that had been missing from her season. The limitation is how the week ended, a 6-1 6-4 loss to Swiatek that was decided early, so the run shows she is competitive at this level rather than peaking.
- Krueger lost her final qualifying match in Wuhan to Yulia Putintseva 1-6 3-6 and entered the main draw as a lucky loser
- She beat Shuai Zhang 6-3 6-0 for her first main-draw win in Wuhan in three visits
- She beat Lanlana Tararudee 2-6 6-1 6-1 to reach a first WTA 1000 round of 16 since Miami 2025
- She lost 6-1 6-4 to Iga Swiatek in the round of 16 on 15 October 2026

Seeding puts Tjen among the eight protected players and confirms she is the higher-ranked of the two here, 21 places above Krueger. As a top-eight seed she cannot meet another seed in the first round, while Krueger, unseeded at 68, has drawn one immediately, which is a harder assignment than the ranking gap alone implies. The seed is a ranking artefact rather than a form statement: Tjen has won seven of her last 15 matches and has already lost to Krueger once this season, so the difference in status is not matched by a difference in recent results.
- Janice Tjen is listed as the No. 6 seed in the Osaka women's singles draw
- Ann Li, ranked 31, is the top seed and Peyton Stearns, ranked 37, the second seed
- Krueger, ranked 68, is unseeded and drawn against Tjen in the first round
- The main-draw draw was made at the Morita Tennis Center Utsubo

The scoreline understates the match: Tjen lost the first set 6-1, then took the second to a tiebreak and held three set points before losing it 7-1, the closest she has come to a WTA 1000 quarter-final. That matters here because she opens against an unseeded opponent and converting leads is the specific area where her results have trailed her ranking of 47. It also sets the level she brings into a 250: Ann Li, who beat her, is the top seed this week. The limitation is that the near-miss remained a straight-sets defeat, and she has lost eight of her last 15 matches.
- Tjen lost to Ann Li 1-6 7-6(1) in the Wuhan round of 16 on 15 October 2026
- She failed to convert three set points in the second set
- The defeat left her short of a first career WTA 1000 quarter-final
