Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 15:41 · Europe/Bucharest

Two TCU teammates, 169 ranking places apart, meet in Fort Worth qualifying with two wins needed to reach the main draw.

Chan sits higher at No. 483, but he has lost 11 of 14 first sets on hard courts while Pascual Ferra has taken nine of 15, so the lean is to the lower-ranked left-hander grabbing the opening set. At 2.1 that is the one reviewed price worth taking; 1.65 on Chan to start faster asks too much.

Context

A collegiate major title is the strongest result on his 2026 record, produced on American hard courts three weeks before Fort Worth and built on five straight wins against a national college field. It gives a 20-year-old ranked No. 652 a recent winning habit and a reason to believe his level has moved since the summer. The limitation is the level itself: the All-American field is collegiate rather than Challenger, and his first professional match after the title ended 6-0 6-1, so the run is better read as evidence of sharpness in these conditions than as proof he is ready for top-500 professional tennis.
- Pascual Ferra beat Keegan Rice 6-3 6-1 in the All-American final
- The title carried an NCAA singles berth
- He beat Kentucky's Nicolas Arseneault in the semifinal the previous day

He took one game off a top-400 opponent in his last completed match, which is the freshest available read on how his game holds up against ranked professionals rather than college peers. It lands directly against the collegiate title and gives a concrete measure of the gap between those two levels. A single match is a thin basis for a trend, and he had won comfortably the day before, but twelve of thirteen games lost is a scoreline that travels badly into a Challenger qualifier three days later.
- Lui Maxted, seeded eighth and ranked No. 394, beat Pascual Ferra 6-0 6-1
- Pascual Ferra had beaten Tomasz Berkieta 6-4 6-2 the previous day in the same event

Chan's early-set record is the weakest part of his recent hard-court sample.
Three first-set wins in 14 matches, with three of those sets reaching tiebreaks, means Chan has usually been chasing. He is 7-7 in second sets in the same sample, so the damage has been containable rather than fatal. Starting behind again would put the pressure back on his return game early in the match.
- 14 hard-court matches tracked from 18 June to 29 September 2026
- First sets: 3 wins, 11 losses; 4.14 games won and 5.71 lost on average
- Three first-set tiebreaks in the sample
Selection for a Davis Cup doubles rubber, alongside a top-20 singles player, is a marker of how Canadian tennis rates a 21-year-old ranked outside the top 450 and shows his competitive September came at team-event intensity. It matters as orientation rather than as a playing condition: the format was doubles, the surface and crowd were a home tie, and nothing in that appearance changes how his singles game projects onto a Challenger hard court. What it does establish is that he was competing at a much higher profile than a No. 483 ranking suggests.
- Chan partnered Auger-Aliassime in Canada's Davis Cup doubles rubber against France in Quebec City
- Herbert and Bonzi won 7-6 6-3
