Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 03:18 · Europe/Bucharest

Two M15 title winners from the same September week, 134 ranking places apart, meet in a Florence qualifying opener where only a win keeps the week alive.

Popko's 14-1 clay run and 12 straight-set wins make him the likely winner, though his own last match was a straight-sets loss to a player ranked 875. Popko at 1.55 is the one quoted price that offers something; Rapagnetta at 2.3 does not.

Context

He won 28 of 32 sets in that stretch, taking first sets by an average of 5.8 games to 3.2 and second sets 5.7 to 2.9. No match in the 15 went to a tiebreak, so his sets were being settled by breaks rather than shootouts. It is a 15-match sample from one surface, and the margins describe how those matches went rather than what awaits him in Florence.
- 15 completed clay matches, 15 September to 3 October 2026
- 12 of 15 matches finished 2-0; 28 of 32 sets won
- Zero tiebreaks across the 15 matches
It was the only defeat in his 15-match clay sample, and it came against the kind of lower-ranked opponent he had been beating all fortnight. He lost both sets without reaching a tiebreak, so the match was not decided by a couple of points. One result does not erase a 14-1 run, but it is the freshest evidence in the record and the clearest note of caution.
- Match dated 3 October 2026 against Stijn Paardekooper (ranked 875)
- Scoreline 4-6 3-6, games 7-12
- The only loss in Popko's 15-match clay sample
The other recent defeats came against Laurent Lokoli (348) and Daniel Siniakov (519) in a three-setter he lost 2-6 in the third. His win in that stretch was a 6-3 6-3 decision over Matteo Sciahbasi (886) on 25 September. His best result of the period remains a 6-4 6-4 win over Garrett Johns (441) on 23 September, so the record mixes genuine scalps with defeats to similar-level opposition.
- 13 completed clay matches, 22 August to 13 October 2026, record 9-4
- Defeats to Lokoli (348), Siniakov (519) and Berto (unranked) in the last four matches
- Win over Garrett Johns (441) 6-4 6-4 on 23 September 2026
Each arrives in Florence with the freshest piece of silverware he owns, both collected on clay in the same mid-September week: Popko at M15 Tsaghkadzor, Rapagnetta at M15 Melilla. For a qualifying opener between No. 495 and No. 629, those title weeks are the most recent sustained match-winning evidence on either side of the net. The counterpoint is level rather than timing: both titles came at M15, the lowest tier of professional singles, and Popko's follow-up event ended in early October with a straight-sets loss to an opponent ranked outside the top 800, so recent trophy form has not yet translated upward.
- Both players appear on the same weekly ITF men's winners list for the week ending .
- Popko's Tsaghkadzor win is listed as his 27th ITF-level singles title.
- Rapagnetta's Melilla win is listed as his first ITF-level singles title.
