Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 16 Oct 2026, 22:06 · Europe/Bucharest

Starodubtseva has the ranking, the second seeding and the better recent wins, but a 4-7 hard-court window and a loss in the pair's only meeting keep the opener close.

She is still the likelier winner, and the shape of Zakharova's recent hard-court results points to a straight-set finish. Of the reviewed prices, Zakharova 2-0 at 3.3 and straight sets at 1.5 hold up; Starodubtseva's 1.65 to win does not.

Context

Starodubtseva's medical timeout in Wuhan is unresolved and she completed that match; against that, the ranking gap and the prior three-set loss to Zakharova frame an opening qualifying round that is tighter than the seedings suggest.

Starodubtseva took a medical timeout in the deciding set of her Wuhan opener, the match in which she led 4-1 before losing 2-6 7-6(2) 6-4 to Catherine McNally. She completed that match and is in the Ningbo qualifying draw five days later, so no evidence yet shows the issue carried forward or caused a withdrawal. The limitation is specific: no post-match explanation has established whether the timeout was physical, environmental or tactical, leaving the situation unresolved. It is worth monitoring because a recurrence in a best-of-three qualifying match would remove much of her ranking cushion.
- Starodubtseva took a medical timeout at 3-4 in the third set of her Wuhan opener against Catherine McNally .
- She led 4-1 in the deciding set before losing 2-6 7-6(2) 6-4.
- She is entered in the Ningbo Open qualifying draw five days later.

The pair's only recorded meeting went the distance, so it argues against expecting a routine straight-sets result. It is a single match played four months ago, and no surface is recorded. Treat it as a counterweight rather than a pattern.
- Anastasia Zakharova beat Yuliia Starodubtseva 6-4 3-6 6-3 on 23 June 2026 in their only recorded meeting.
The 2026 Ningbo Open is a WTA 500 tournament at the Yinzhou Tennis Center, with qualifying on 17-18 October and the main draw from 19-25 October. This fixture is therefore a qualifying match played for a place in the main draw, not a main-draw round, which sets the stakes for both players. The qualifying field is deep, headed by Daria Snigur at No. 42 and Starodubtseva at No. 44. The gap in the published material is the round inside qualifying, so the number of wins still needed to reach the main draw is not confirmed.
- WTA 500 Ningbo Open runs 17-25 October 2026 at the Yinzhou Tennis Center.
- Qualifying is 17-18 October; the main draw is 19-25 October.
- The qualifying field includes Daria Snigur (No. 42), Starodubtseva (No. 44) and Mayar Sherif (No. 52).

Starodubtseva is listed as the second seed in the Ningbo qualifying draw at No. 44, behind only Daria Snigur, making her more than 60 ranking places higher than Zakharova at No. 111. That gap is the clearest structural difference between the two players going into the match. Seeding, however, reflects entry-list ranking rather than current form, and both players arrive after losses in China. The seed position also says nothing about how the specific styles match up on a hard court.
- Starodubtseva is the No. 2 seed in the Ningbo qualifying draw.
- She is listed at No. 44; Zakharova is No. 111.
