Two Japanese players meet in the Jinan quarter-final, and the lower-ranked man is the form pick: No.

406 Watanuki has won four straight-set matches this week, including against Marin Cilic. Mochizuki, No. 123, has won both his matches in straight sets but needed second-set tiebreaks. Watanuki is the likelier winner, yet 1.73 on the match and 1.73 on the first set ask too much; only the 2.6 on Watanuki to win 2-0 offers anything.

Context

Watanuki comes into the quarter-final with four straight-sets wins in five days at this venue, starting from the qualifying draw. The sequence includes a 7-5 6-4 second-round defeat of Marin Cilic, a former world No. 3 and the seventh seed, showing a level well above his No. 406 ranking on this court. The counterpoint is the extra qualifying load, since Mochizuki has played only two matches this week, though Watanuki has not dropped a set.
- Watanuki beat seventh seed Marin Cilic 7-5 6-4 in the second round .
- He won the final qualifying round 6-2 6-2 against Kaito Uesugi on 12 October and dropped no sets in qualifying.
- He opened the main draw with a 6-2 6-2 win over Andre Ilagan .

Diaz Acosta was the fourth seed and the world No. 69, so the 6-2 7-6(6) first-round win is the strongest result of Mochizuki's week and explains how a No. 123 player reached the last eight. His follow-up against Sweeny was also straight sets, but both second sets went to tie-breaks, so the victories were narrower than the scorelines suggest. Sweeny had reached that round only after Bernard Tomic retired at 2-2 in the first set.
- Mochizuki beat fourth seed Facundo Diaz Acosta, the world No. 69, 6-2 7-6(6) in the first round .
- He then beat Dane Sweeny 6-3 7-6(5) .
- Dane Sweeny had advanced to the second round after Bernard Tomic retired at 2-2 in the first set.

Mochizuki, the higher-ranked player at No. 123, has often had to come from behind in the tracked hard-court window.
His opening sets have gone 4.50 games to 5.36 against, which makes the first set the part of his game most likely to be surrendered. The second-set record flips to 8-6 in his favour, so he has been better once the match is underway. The 14-match sample ends on 15 October and includes five 0-2 defeats, leaving the early exchanges the clearest opening for his opponent.
- Hard-court sample: 14 completed matches, 11 August to 15 October 2026.
- Set 1 record 6-8, averaging 4.50 games won and 5.36 lost per set.
- Set 2 record 8-6; scorelines across the sample: five 2-0 wins, five 0-2 defeats, two 2-1 wins, two 1-2 defeats.
Watanuki arrives at this quarter-final with serve numbers that sit well above his No. 406 ranking.
His serve has been the most reliable part of his week and of the wider 15-match window, producing cheap holds that keep pressure on the returner. He lands 53.4% of first serves, so the pattern depends on the delivery going in, and he has won 51.5% of total points across the sample. The ranking remains the obvious caveat against reading this as a settled level.
- 15 matches tracked, with 1,049 service points faced and 560 first serves landed.
- First-serve points won 74.6% (418/560); 7.5 aces and 2.6 double faults per match.
- Total points won 51.5% (1,079/2,095); first serve landed 53.4% (560/1,049).
