Two out-of-form men open the Jinan Challenger: Smith's hard-court serving gives him a narrow edge over Sakellaridis, but his 6-7 record on the surface and a Wuning collapse from match points keep it close.

Smith is the modest lean, at low confidence. No quoted price was put forward here, so there is nothing worth backing.

Context

Greece's Davis Cup tie in Košice on 19- went to the fifth rubber, where Gombos beat Sakellaridis 6-4 7-6(4) after Molcan had won their opening singles 6-1 6-1. Sakellaridis therefore played two singles matches in two days on outdoor clay. It matters because it is recent, high-stakes singles work and frames the run of defeats he brings to Jinan. The surface and team format limit how far the clay results translate to this hard court.
- Slovakia beat Greece 3-2 in the Davis Cup tie played in Košice on 19-
- Norbert Gombos beat Sakellaridis 6-4 7-6(4) in the decisive fifth rubber
- Alex Molcan beat Sakellaridis 6-1 6-1 in the opening singles
- The tie was played on outdoor clay

Smith has played the longer, more drawn-out matches of the two on this surface.
Smith's 13-match hard-court sample from 21 July to 6 October 2026 averages 27.0 games, with nine matches containing at least one tiebreak and seven going to a decider. Sakellaridis's hard-court matches in the same period have averaged fewer games, so the set-length risk sits mostly on Smith's side of the net. Length is not the same as success: four of Smith's 13 matches ended in a straight-sets defeat.
- Smith's 13 hard-court matches tracked from 21 July to 6 October 2026 averaged 27.0 total games
- Nine of those 13 matches included at least one tiebreak
- Seven of the 13 reached a deciding set (four 2-1 wins, three 1-2 losses)
Sakellaridis has been far more competitive in opening sets than in second sets on this surface.
Sakellaridis's hard-court set data from 18 August to 5 October 2026 splits sharply: he is 5-4 in first sets, averaging 4.9 games won and 5.2 lost, but 2-7 in second sets at 3.8 games won and 5.8 lost. Four of those nine matches ended in straight-sets defeats. In a best-of-three first round, a competitive opening set has not translated into sustained pressure.
- Sakellaridis's nine hard-court matches from 18 August to 5 October 2026 produced a 2-7 second-set record
- He averaged 3.8 games won and 5.8 lost in second sets, against 4.9 won and 5.2 lost in first sets
- Four of the nine matches ended 0-2 in sets
Smith's most recent completed match, a Wuning Challenger first round, turned on a second set he led 5-3 with match points in hand; Moriya saved six match points and took the decider 3-6 7-6(5) 6-3. It matters because Smith arrives at the Jinan opener without a completed win since late September, and his latest losses have come against players ranked below him. The record shows only that he let a commanding position slip; it establishes no physical problem and no automatic repeat.
- Smith lost 3-6 7-6(5) 6-3 to Hiroki Moriya in the Wuning Challenger first round
- Moriya came back from 3-5 down in the second set and saved six match points
- The Wuning match was Smith's most recent completed singles match before the Jinan fixture
