A 17-year-old WTA 1000 debutant, Mia Pohankova, meets Xiyu Wang, the higher-ranked left-hander playing at home in Wuhan, in the second round.

Wang's 6-2 6-0 opener and No. 91 ranking make her the likely winner, but Pohankova is 8-3 on hard courts and has won 10 of 11 second sets in that window. Wang's 1.50 to win is not worthwhile; the price that does offer something is Pohankova with a 5.5-game start at 1.36.

Context

Wang won her first senior multi-sport title, beating Zhang Shuai 6-2 6-1 in the Nagoya final, then travelled to Wuhan and opened with a 6-2 6-0 win over Wang Xinyu ten days later. That gives her a run of recent match wins and a home crowd in a WTA 1000 she entered on a wild card. The Asian Games draw was not a full tour-strength field and her final opponent was 37, so the result is a reliable sharpness marker rather than evidence she is outplaying younger, higher-ranked opposition.
- Wang Xiyu won the Nagoya Asian Games women's singles final 6-2 6-1 against Zhang Shuai .
- China took a sixth consecutive Asian Games women's singles gold and secured an Olympic singles place.
- Wang Xiyu entered the Wuhan main draw on a wild card and plays at home in China.
- She beat Wang Xinyu 6-2 6-0 in Wuhan ten days after that final.

Pohanková had never played a WTA 1000 main draw before Wuhan, and she answered it with a 6-1 6-3 win over a top-70 opponent . That backs the form she built in WTA 125 and ITF events, including a Porto semi-final in late September. Her tour-level hard-court record is still only a handful of matches, and the win came against Bondar after the draw changed, so it is a real step up without yet showing she can repeat the level against a higher-ranked opponent.
- Pohankova beat Anna Bondar 6-1 6-3 in her first WTA 1000 main-draw appearance.
- She is the 2025 Wimbledon junior champion.
- She reached a WTA 125 semi-final in Porto in late September, beating Francisca Jorge, Veronika Podrez and Katie Swan.

Wang Xiyu, the lower-ranked of the two Chinese Wangs, conceded only two games against a top-40 compatriot and former Wuhan semi-finalist . That is a more convincing recent win than the bare score suggests and confirms she is handling this court and this swing well. It came against a different opponent with a different game, so it does not directly preview how she matches up with the 17-year-old Pohanková.
- Wang Xiyu beat Wang Xinyu 6-2 6-0 in the Wuhan first round .
- The win moved Xiyu to 3-0 in the head-to-head against Xinyu.
- Wang Xinyu was a Wuhan semi-finalist in 2024.
- Xiyu, a left-hander, is the lower-ranked of the two.

Pohankova's 10-1 second-set record is the sharpest split in either player's supplied hard-court data.
Pohankova has won 10 of her 11 second sets on hard courts since late August, against a 7-4 first-set record in the same 11-match window. That split suggests Wang's best chance of control comes early, before Pohankova settles into the match. It is a small sample, so it describes a pattern rather than a reliable rate.
- Pohankova set 2 record on hard: 10-1 across 11 matches, 23 August to 12 October 2026
- Pohankova set 1 record in the same window: 7-4
- Seven of those 11 matches finished 2-0; two were 1-2 and one 2-1
