Pre-match view

Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 01:50 · Europe/Bucharest

Eala, the No. 18 seed, meets a home qualifier, Han Shi, who has won four of six matches in 11 days while Eala's hard-court record stops on 24 September.

Eala is still the likelier winner, but 1.22 on her asks too much. Han Shi at 4.25 to win and 3.3 in either set, over 21.5 games at 2.3 and over 2.5 sets at 2.9 all carry a positive edge.

Context

Han Shi has six matches behind her since 1 October, including two qualifying wins over top-80 opponents, against an opponent whose hard-court sample ends 24 September. Eala's ranking gap is real, but the activity gap and the set-level numbers keep the match closer than the ranking difference alone suggests.

Eala's seed sits above her ranking because several leading players, including world No. 1 Elena Rybakina, Coco Gauff, Linda Noskova and Amanda Anisimova, are absent from the event. The smaller draw leaves the seeds without a first-round bye, so Eala must win a match to advance rather than entering at the round of 32. The field is therefore thinner at the top than a full WTA 1000, and her first opponent is a home qualifier rather than a seeded player.
- Eala is seeded 13th at the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open
- She opens in the round of 64 against qualifier Han Shi at Dongfeng Voyah Center Court
- The reduced draw leaves seeds without a first-round bye
- Rybakina, Gauff, Noskova and Anisimova are absent from the event

Han Shi's qualifying run puts her into a WTA 1000 main draw for the first time and gives her two completed hard-court matches immediately before this fixture. Both wins came against top-100 opponents, a higher level than most of her recent matches at lower-tier events, and she needed three sets to beat Peyton Stearns. The counterpoint is workload: the same run that supplies match sharpness adds two matches and a long opening win to her legs.
- Han Shi entered Wuhan qualifying on a wildcard
- She beat Peyton Stearns and Kamilla Rakhimova to qualify
- It is her first WTA 1000 main draw

Alexandra Eala is the higher-ranked player and, on this sample, the one who starts faster.
Eala's first-set record (9-4) is the clearer part of her hard-court form, and her opening sets have been shorter than her second sets. That fits a player who can take control early, though the drop to 8-5 in second sets leaves room for a longer match. The 13-match surface sample excludes one retirement, so the split reflects completed matches only.
- Eala won 9 of 13 first sets and 8 of 13 second sets in hard-court matches dated 28 July to 24 September 2026.
- Her first sets averaged 9.15 total games; her second sets averaged 9.85.
- The 13-match hard-court sample excludes one retirement.
Han Shi has lost more first sets than she has won, but few of them have been settled early.
Her first sets averaged 10.07 games, slightly more than her second sets at 9.93, and five of 15 reaching a tiebreak shows how often the opener goes deep. She took her most recent opening set 7-6 against Kamilla Rakhimova (No. 76) on 11 October, then closed the match 6-1. Eala has the better first-set record at 9-4, so Han Shi winning the opener would run against the pattern.
- Han Shi won 7 of 15 first sets in hard-court matches dated 10 September to 11 October 2026.
- Five of those 15 first sets went to a tiebreak; her first sets averaged 10.07 total games against 9.93 in second sets.
- She won the opening set 7-6 against Kamilla Rakhimova (No. 76) on 11 October 2026.
