Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 02:48 · Europe/Bucharest

A qualifier in rhythm against a higher-ranked name short of wins.

Kotov has won two Shanghai qualifying matches and 10 of his 13 tracked hard-court matches; Griekspoor has lost both Asian-swing openers and 10 of his last 15. Griekspoor's serve and ranking still make him the likelier winner, but 1.44 asks more than that edge justifies, while Kotov at 2.75 is the one quoted price with something behind it.

Context

Kotov arrives with recent competitive rhythm on hard courts, having won two qualifying rounds on 5 and, the first of them a three-setter against a seeded opponent. The cost is workload: he has played five matches in China since early September and gets only one day off before this match, while Griekspoor has played once since late September. Those qualifying wins came below Masters 1000 level, so they are a guide to current form rather than a direct measure against a top-60 opponent.
- Beat Martin Damm, the No. 10 qualifying seed, 7-6(4) 6-7(4) 6-3
- Beat No. 13 qualifying seed Aleksandar Vukic 6-3 6-3 in the final qualifying round
- Kotov is unseeded and ranked outside the top 180

A slower, higher-bouncing hard court reduces the value of free serve points and rewards players who can sustain long baseline exchanges, which is the surface both men will meet on. That matters here because it turns the match into a test of rally tolerance rather than first-strike serving. The 2026 readings are not yet available and milder, drier weather than 2025 is forecast, so the courts may play quicker than last year's numbers suggest.
- 2025 Court Pace Index was about 32.8, down from roughly 41 in 2024
- Players described the 2025 conditions as unusually slow with heavy balls
- The venue is an outdoor DecoTurf hard court at near sea level

Griekspoor has been a slow starter on hard courts in this window but the stronger of the two men once a match reaches its second set.
Griekspoor lost six of eight first sets in this sample, which gives the lower-ranked Kotov a realistic route to an early lead. He then won six of eight second sets, averaging 5.63 games to 4.63 in them, so he has repeatedly repaired sets within matches over these eight outings. With that small a sample the split is a pattern rather than a settled habit, and the ranking gap still points one way across a best-of-three match.
- Griekspoor's hard-court set evidence covers eight matches from 27 July 2026 to 1 October 2026
- First sets: 2 wins, 6 losses. Second sets: 6 wins, 2 losses
- Second sets average 5.63 games won to 4.63 lost; first sets average 4.88 won to 5.75 lost
- Five of the eight matches featured at least one tiebreak
Kotov's 10-3 hard-court line across 13 tracked matches is the strongest part of his case, although it was built against opponents ranked 104 to 455. The defeat to a player 47 places below him, in two lopsided sets, shows how quickly that record can turn. Griekspoor sits above almost everyone Kotov has beaten in this window, so the win-loss figure needs to be weighed rather than read at face value.
- Kotov lost to Marat Sharipov 0-6 3-6 on 20 September 2026 in a hard-court match
- Sharipov was ranked No. 234 at the time, against Kotov's No. 187
- The match was completed in straight sets and is one of Kotov's six most recent tracked matches
