Caroline Werner #273Germany00 – 2Anna Blinkova #89France2

This is a 125-level event rather than a tour main-draw stop, so the ranking gap between No. 89 and No. 273 is a normal feature of the field rather than an anomaly, and play is on outdoor hard courts at the Samsun Metropolitan Municipality golf and tennis facilities. The second edition runs 4–11 October with about 70 players from 31 countries, and it follows last week's WTA 125 in Adana, the first of two consecutive Turkish 125s. The top seed was already beaten in the first round, so the draw is more open than the entry list suggested. The limitation is the level: a deep run here is worth 125 points and does not settle questions about either player's form at tour events.

Andreescu's wildcard is the reason this Samsun draw has drawn wider attention than a normal 125 event, and she has been scheduled on centre court. For this fixture it frames the field rather than the matchup: neither Werner nor Blinkova has to face her, and the ranking range across the rest of the draw is wide. A strong week here will still be measured against the presence of a former Grand Slam champion in the same field, even though nothing about her participation changes how this second-round match is decided.

Werner had to qualify, and her three completed matches in Samsun include a 6-0 6-0 first-round win, so she arrives with more competitive minutes on these courts than Blinkova. The double bagel is the strongest current signal on her side of the draw and it came the day before this match. The counterweight is the level of opposition: her most recent match against a top-100 player was a straight-sets defeat by Darja Vidmanova in August, which is the closer guide to a meeting with Blinkova.
