Two Italians meet in the Palermo Challenger second round: Caniato's clay form (11-3 in his last 14) against a higher-ranked Passaro who beat him in three sets at Todi in August.

Caniato looks the likelier winner, and four of his prices offer something — 2.2 to win the match, 2.1 for the first set, 2.05 for the second and 3.3 to win 2-0. Passaro's shorter prices do not reflect his clay results.

Context

Passaro beat Caniato in three sets in their only recent meeting, so the higher-ranked player has a working template against him on this surface. Caniato took the opening set that day before Passaro's baseline pressure turned the match, which is what makes the rematch worth reading rather than a repeat of a one-sided result. It is a single clay meeting from two months earlier, so it describes how the two match up rather than a settled pattern.
- Passaro defeated Carlo Alberto Caniato 4-6 6-4 6-4 in the singles round of 32 at the Todi Challenger in August 2026.
- The match was played on clay, the same surface as this fixture.

Caniato arrives in Palermo with a first Challenger title won two weeks earlier on Italian clay, the clearest sign that his current level sits above the No. 318 ranking he carries into this fixture. The final turned on a deciding-set tiebreak, so the title is also evidence that he can close out tight matches rather than only accumulate wins. The limitation is the level of the event: Biella is the smallest tier on the Challenger circuit, so the win does not by itself show he can handle a seeded opponent over best-of-three.
- Carlo Alberto Caniato won his maiden ATP Challenger title at the 50-level event in Biella, defeating Alejandro Moro Canas 7-6(1) 6-4.
- He entered the Biella tournament as a wild card ranked in the mid-500s.

Caniato's September run was built entirely on Italian clay in the conditions of this fixture, and it included a win over a seeded Challenger opponent in Gentzsch. He then lost the final to Mikrut by two games in each set, which places his level just beneath a top-215 clay player rather than at it. The value here is recent clay match volume and consistency; the counterpoint is that the run still ended without the title and was decided on the same narrow margins that separate players at this level.
- Caniato made it seven wins in a row on home soil by beating second seed Tom Gentzsch 6-3 5-7 7-5 in Genoa.
- Luka Mikrut beat Caniato 6-4 7-5 in the Genoa final .

Caniato's clay run through August and September has been built on fast starts rather than slow ones.
Taking the first set leaves an opponent needing two in a best-of-three, and Caniato converted nine of those 14 clay matches into straight-set wins, so the fast start is where his recent edge sits. The caution is sample size: 14 completed matches over roughly two months, with two first-set losses in that stretch.
- Caniato is 12-2 in first sets across 14 completed clay matches from 10 August to 6 October 2026.
- He averages 5.7 games won and 3.3 games lost in first sets, with one tiebreak in those 14 matches.
- He won nine of the 14 matches in straight sets.
