Zsombor Piros #123Hungary22 – 1Tristan Boyer #168United States1

Piros's clay sample is small but internally consistent: he has either won in two sets or lost in two, with no deciding set in the eight matches.

That pattern points to a quick, two-set shape as a realistic outcome for this first round against an opponent without tracked clay matches, but it is a sample of eight and three further matches from the same window were excluded as retirements, so it describes a tendency rather than a rule.

That result is the firmest counterweight to the ranking argument in Piros's favour heading into Braga.

It shows his clay form is not untouchable and gives Boyer a recent example of a higher-ranked opponent being beaten comfortably on the surface, though one match is a single data point rather than a trend.

This is an absence of evidence about Boyer on clay rather than evidence that he struggles on it.

It makes the surface a genuine unknown for Boyer in this first round and is part of why the ranking gap carries weight, but an empty sample also leaves open the possibility that he adjusts quickly.

It is Boyer's most recent completed match and shows he can start quickly while struggling to close out the win.

Boyer's recent matches have been long and tight against lower-ranked opponents, so the formline is mixed rather than clearly strong or weak. A single three-set hard-court loss does not establish how he will handle the switch to clay.
