Johan Nikles #391Switzerland22 – 0Martim BernardoPortugal0

The 09:00 listing places this fixture at the start of Court 2's programme . It defines the immediate first-round setting for both players and the sequence of play on that court. The listing does not provide court-condition or player-availability information.

Nikles won the opening set in 9 of his 15 clay matches between 24 July and 15 September 2026, but took the second set in only 6 of them. In a best-of-three qualifier, that second-set dip is where a match can turn. Those 15 matches averaged 21.2 games with two tiebreaks, so the sets themselves have generally been tight. The sample is recent but small.

Djere, ranked 181, is the highest-ranked opponent in the recent records supplied for either player, and Nikles took the opening set off him 7-6 before losing 3-6, 0-6 on 15 September 2026. The scoreline shows a competitive first set against a stronger opponent, and a one-sided third. It is a single match rather than a trend, and it says nothing about Bernardo, whose clay level remains unmeasured. It does show that a tight first set alone settles little.

That is a gap in the evidence, not a verdict on his clay game. Nikles, by contrast, has 15 clay matches logged between 24 July and 15 September 2026, the only surface form anchor either player brings to this qualifying round. With no clay data on Bernardo, his level on the surface is unknown rather than demonstrably poor.
