Pre-match view

Context last updated 29 Sep 2026, 19:05 · Europe/Bucharest

Zheng Qinwen, the home wildcard and 2024 Beijing semifinalist, opens against qualifier Han Shi, ranked 231.

Zheng's serve and higher-level wins make her the likely winner, but Han is 11-4 on hard in this sample and arrives with match minutes behind her. The one quoted price worth attention is Han Shi to win at 7.0; Zheng at 1.1 asks for about nine wins in ten, which her recent form does not justify.

Context

Zheng is the home player in this opening match, and her own account places the China Open alongside the majors in importance. That fixes the crowd and expectation around the fixture, which is played in Beijing rather than a neutral venue. The extra pressure is her own description rather than a measured change in form, so it sets the occasion more than it forecasts the result.
- Pre-tournament press conference in Beijing, : Zheng said that to play in China is like playing the fifth Grand Slam.
- Zheng said playing at home brings extra pressure as well as extra support from the crowd.

Zheng's route runs through the same quarter as Elena Rybakina, the player who ended her US Open run in the quarterfinals after Zheng had beaten Iga Swiatek in the previous round. Winning this first-round match against a qualifier is the entry point to that possibility, so it gives the opener a clear forward-looking stake. The fourth-round meeting is only a potential outcome, not a fixed fixture, so it frames the stakes rather than changing the assessment of this match.
- Zheng beat Iga Swiatek 7-5 6-3 in the US Open fourth round and lost to Elena Rybakina 6-3 1-6 4-6 in the quarterfinals on 9 September 2026.
- Zheng is drawn in the same quarter as Rybakina, with a fourth-round rematch of their US Open meeting possible.

Zheng dropped outside the top 120 during a lengthy absence after elbow surgery and has climbed back to No. 54, with a US Open quarterfinal the clearest marker of her current level. That recovery is what she carries into a home event where she plays on a wildcard rather than a seeded entry. The surgery is background rather than a restriction reported as active now, so it describes the level she has regained without asserting a present fitness problem.
- Zheng spent a lengthy layoff outside the top 120 after elbow surgery and has since rebuilt her ranking.
- A US Open quarterfinal run lifted her back to a ranking in the low fifties, No. 54.

Han Shi won two qualifying matches on 28 and, the second a three-setter in which she lost the opening set, to reach the main draw. She therefore arrives with recent match sharpness but also with accumulated hard-court minutes, while Zheng enters on a wildcard with a longer gap since her last match. That difference in recent match time is a real condition of this opener rather than a shared, routine turnaround.
- Han Shi beat Elvina Kalieva 6-7 7-5 6-3 in the last round of China Open qualifying .
- She had beaten Tereza Mihalikova 6-0 6-2 in the first qualifying round.
