Context last updated 1 Oct 2026, 03:14 · Europe/Bucharest

Alves has not lost a clay match since 10 September and meets the higher-ranked Villanueva, who beat the fourth seed in round one.

Alves is the likelier winner, with a two-set win his usual route, but the 1.36 match price, the 1.44 first-set price and the 1.95 two-set price ask more than his form justifies. Villanueva at 2.9 is the only quoted price that offers value.

Context

Prado Angelo was the fourth seed and about 170 places above Villanueva, so this is the best win of Villanueva's recent run and it came on the clay he favours. It matters here because Alves sits at No. 417, below Villanueva, yet arrives on a long clay winning streak, so the seed upset is the clearest evidence that Villanueva can handle a higher-rated opponent in this draw. The limitation is that every other win in his recent sample came against a player outside the top 300.
- Villanueva beat fourth seed Juan Carlos Prado Angelo 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the Curitiba first round.
- Prado Angelo was ranked around No. 160, roughly 170 places above Villanueva.
- Every other win in Villanueva's recent sample came against a player outside the top 300.

Alves extended his clay winning run to 11 straight matches with his first-round result and moved provisionally to No. 382, with no clay defeat in the stretch that began in early September. It matters because his season ranking of No. 417 understates how much winning tennis he has played on this surface in the last month. The counterweight is the level of the run: those wins came at ITF and low-tier Challenger events in Brazil, so the opposition is weaker than the No. 159 seed Villanueva beat in the first round.
- Alves beat Jose Pereira 6-2 1-6 6-4 in the Curitiba first round .
- The win was his 11th consecutive and raised him provisionally to No. 382.
- Alves was one of seven Brazilians to win a first-round match on the rain-hit opening day.

Villanueva only completed his first-round win, after the match was suspended overnight, while Alves finished his first round and both players were scheduled to return on 1 October. It matters because the compressed rest window and the disruption of an unfinished match land on Villanueva alone in this pairing. Both had three-set first rounds, so the difference is recovery time rather than accumulated sets.
- Villanueva's first-round match was suspended by rain in the opening set and completed .
- Alves completed his first round .
- The round of 16 between the two is scheduled for 1 October.

Alves is the player arriving with the deeper recent clay record and the stronger set-level numbers.
Ten of those 11 matches finished 2-0 and only one included a tiebreak, so his clay wins have generally come without a long, undecided passage. Villanueva has won 12 of 15 second sets on the same surface, which is the clearest reason Alves's first-set command does not automatically carry through the whole match.
- Across 11 clay matches from 10 to 29 September 2026, Alves's first-set record was 11-0 and his second-set record 10-1.
- Ten of those matches were won 2-0 and one 2-1, with a single tiebreak in the sample.
- Those 11 matches averaged 18.5 total games and 2.09 sets.
