Context last updated 29 Sep 2026, 04:37 · Europe/Bucharest

Both men lost their Chengdu openers, and Baez, the world No. 51 against a home wildcard ranked No. 250, is the likelier winner, though not comfortably.

Baez at 2.25 to win, 2.2 to take the first set and 1.8 with a 2.5-game start all offer something; Under 2.5 sets at 1.5 does not, and neither does Shang at 1.65 to win.

Context

Shang led the first-set tie-break 6-4 and 9-8 and held multiple set points, but Mannarino saved them all and closed it 11-9 before taking the second set 6-2. The straight-sets scoreline hides how close the opening set was, and Shang now arrives in Beijing without a win since early August, a run that includes first-round exits at the US Open and in Chengdu. His own hard courts season does contain a three-set win over Andrey Rublev in early August, so the form line is not uniformly poor.
- Mannarino beat Shang 7-6(9) 6-2 in Chengdu .
- Shang held set points in the first-set tie-break, which Mannarino took 11-9.
- Shang's most recent singles win came on 4 August.

Báez's best results have come on clay, and his recent hard-court record sits close to even, so a straight-sets loss in his first match of the swing leaves him short of wins on the surface Beijing is played on. He opens against a left-hander in Shang, a matchup that on a quick hard court gives a clay-oriented baseliner less time to set his feet than he gets in clay-court rallies. Báez did win four of his six hard-court matches in August, so the surface is a weakness of degree rather than an absolute.
- Brooksby beat Báez 7-5 7-5 in Chengdu on 23 September.
- Báez began the Asian swing with that defeat.
- Báez's hard-court record in his recent sample sits close to even.

Shang plays at home as a 21-year-old wildcard ranked No. 250.
Eight of Shang's 12 completed hard-court matches finished in straight sets, and the second-set numbers are the weakest part of the profile: four wins from 12, against a 6-6 split in first sets. Baez has won six of his ten second sets in his own hard-court sample, so the middle of the match is where Shang has most often given ground in this window.
- Home setEvidence: 12 completed hard-court best-of-three matches, 6 October 2025 to 24 September 2026, no retirements in the sample.
- First sets 6-6 with three tie-breaks; second sets 4-8 with one tie-break.
- Scorelines in that sample: five 0-2 defeats, three 1-2 defeats, one 2-1 win and three 2-0 wins.
- First-set games average 4.92 won to 5.25 lost; second-set games average 4.00 won to 5.33 lost.
Baez arrives at No. 51 and has been the steadier starter in the recent hard-court sample.
Seven of ten opening sets went Baez's way, and five of those ten matches ended 2-0, so an early lead has usually carried through. He lost in straight sets only twice in the sample. Shang's own second sets have been the weaker half of his hard-court record, which makes Baez's habit of front-running the relevant detail for this first round.
- Away setEvidence: 10 completed hard-court best-of-three matches, 4 August to 23 September 2026, one retirement excluded.
- First sets 7-3 with no tie-breaks; second sets 6-4 with two tie-breaks.
- Scorelines: five 2-0 wins, two 0-2 defeats, one 2-1 win and two 1-2 defeats.
- First-set games average 5.3 won to 4.8 lost; second-set games average 5.1 won to 4.5 lost.
