Context last updated 29 Sep 2026, 05:20 · Europe/Bucharest

Two players separated by one ranking place meet in the Beijing first round, with the winner facing the 11th seed.

Tjen's serve gives her the narrow edge, but Kalinina's return numbers and four matches in four days in Shenzhen cut against it. Nothing among the reviewed prices — Tjen 1.85, Kalinina 1.95, Under 2.5 sets at 1.5 — offers value.

Context

Kalinina played four matches across four days in Shenzhen, including a five-set-equivalent workload in singles terms and the opening rubber of the final, then travels to Beijing for a 30 September first round. Tjen has not competed since 16 September, so the two arrive with markedly different recent match loads and recovery windows. The difference is a scheduling and travel factor rather than a reported fitness problem, and it does not by itself establish how either player will perform.
- Kalinina lost the opening rubber of the Billie Jean King Cup final to Karolina Muchova 6-2 6-3 in Shenzhen .
- She won her quarterfinal singles match 6-7 6-1 6-1 and then her semifinal 6-3 6-4, and also played the decisive doubles rubber .
- Tjen's most recent competitive match came on 16 September, two weeks before Kalinina's last one.

Tjen's serve is the department where she holds a genuine edge over Kalinina in this matchup.
Kalinina has won 59.9% of first-serve points on hard courts in seven matches, so Tjen's 68.0% figure over 10 matches is the standout number on either side. Tjen's serve is also her main route to cheap points at 5.7 aces per match, in a contest where neither player's return game has been dominant. The 10-match sample includes five straight-set defeats, so the serve has not translated into a winning record in this window.
- Tjen won 68.0% of first-serve points (334 of 491) across 10 hard-court matches from 27 July to 16 September 2026.
- She averaged 5.7 aces per match in those 10 hard-court matches and 4.6 per match across her last 15 matches.
- Kalinina won 59.9% of first-serve points on hard courts over seven matches and averaged 2.0 aces per match over four.
The winner moves into a second-round meeting with the 11th seed Diana Shnaider, who has a bye into that round, so this is a direct route into a seeded opponent rather than a neutral section of the draw. Tjen is ranked No. 49 and Kalinina No. 50, so the fixture is a near-even ranking match with a WTA 1000 second round at stake. The draw is a scheduling fact and does not indicate how the match itself will be decided.
- The Beijing main draw places Kalinina and Tjen in the same first-round pairing, with Diana Shnaider [11] awaiting the winner after a bye.
- Tjen is ranked No. 49 and Kalinina No. 50 in the latest listing, putting the two within one ranking place of each other.
ConfirmedSources checked 29 Sep 2026, 05:17 · Europe/Bucharest
Beijing is a mandatory WTA 1000 event, so Tjen's appearance here was set by tour obligations rather than a free choice of schedule. She gave up a place at the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, where several other leading Asian players made the same call for the same calendar reason. The result is a two-week competitive gap: her last match was a pair of tie-break sets against Sloane Stephens on 16 September, so this first round is her return to tournament play.
- Tjen was named among the leading Asian players who withdrew from the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games to play the mandatory WTA 1000 in Beijing.
- Indonesian reports state that Tjen did not receive the scheduling exemption that would have allowed her to compete at the Asian Games.
- Her most recent match was a 7-6(4) 7-6(3) loss to Sloane Stephens on 16 September.
