Pre-match view

Context last updated 28 Sep 2026, 01:25 · Europe/Bucharest

Jack Kennedy is the higher-ranked player by 214 places, but Bryce Nakashima holds the recent hard-court record: 10 wins in 14 matches against Kennedy's one opening set won in six.

Nakashima is the likelier winner, most probably in straight sets. Of the reviewed prices, only 1.55 for him to take the opening set offers anything; 1.50 on the match and Kennedy's prices do not.

Context

Reaching the doubles final in Tulsa leaves Nakashima one day to turn around into a singles match in Columbus, a shorter changeover than Jack Kennedy had after his 22 September match. He has played almost exclusively on hard courts in 2026, so the surface is familiar; the open question is how much the college doubles run and the travel cost him in a best-of-three opener. The evidence establishes the schedule, not his physical condition after it. Read as workload alone, it is a modest negative that does not decide the match.
- Bryce Nakashima and Aidan Kim reached the ITA Men's All-American Championships doubles final in Tulsa .
- Ohio State scheduled the doubles final for approximately 12:30 PM ET on the final day of the event.
- This Columbus match is scheduled for 28 September.

Kennedy, 18, is the higher-ranked player at No. 388 but has been starting his recent hard-court matches slowly.
Kennedy has trailed after the opening set in five of those six matches, and recent first-set defeats by 1-6, 2-6 and 4-6 left him chasing the scoreline from early on. That runs into an opponent who has taken 11 of 14 opening sets on the same surface and format. The caveat is that six matches is a small sample and one early break can swing a set the other way.
- Kennedy's first set on hard in best-of-three: 1 win, 5 losses across six matches from 29 June to 22 September 2026
- He averaged 3.17 games won and 5.67 games lost in first sets over that sample
- His six-match hard-court set record includes three 0-2 defeats and one 2-0 win
The 2-0 wins are the largest block in that sample, alongside three 0-2 losses, one three-set win and one three-set loss, for an average of 2.14 sets per match. Most sets in the window were settled by a break rather than a tiebreak, with only five of the 14 matches containing one at all. The sample mixes Challenger and college-level opposition and excludes one retired match, so it describes a match shape rather than a guaranteed outcome.
- Nakashima's 14 completed hard-court best-of-three matches from 29 July to 18 September 2026 included nine 2-0 wins
- Scorelines in that window: nine 2-0 wins, one 2-1 win, three 0-2 losses, one 1-2 loss
- Average sets per match 2.14 and average total games 21.5, with five matches containing a tiebreak
- One retired match was excluded from the 14-match sample
Kennedy called his US Open debut a dream come true, an 18-year-old stepping onto a Grand Slam court for the first time at the end of August. That opening loss to Lloyd Harris sits less than a month before this match and marks the standard he has been measured against since. The defeat was one-sided, so it establishes the milestone rather than a run of competitive form. It matters here because it shows how quickly he has moved from ITF and junior tennis into Challenger main draws against opponents like Nakashima.
- Jack Kennedy, 18, is from Huntington, New York.
- Kennedy played his first Grand Slam main draw at the 2026 US Open and lost his opening match to Lloyd Harris.
- Kennedy said before the tournament that a Grand Slam debut would be a dream come true.
