Context last updated 27 Sep 2026, 23:38 · Europe/Bucharest

Meligeni Alves owns the better clay record but has not played since 8 September, while Zárate arrives higher-ranked with a September title and recent match play — that contrast is the match.

Meligeni Alves still shapes as the likelier winner, yet 1.33 for his match win asks more than his form supports. The room sits with Zárate: 3 to win, 5.25 for a straight-sets win, 2.6 in each of the first two sets.

Context

Meligeni Alves has not recorded a match since 8 September, when he lost his Genoa first round to Hugo Dellien, and he came off the Challenger 125 entry list in Szczecin the following week. That is a three-week gap before a home first round arriving after four defeats in his last five matches, an unusual pairing of poor recent results with an extended break. Freshness is the plausible benefit and lost clay rhythm the plausible cost, and no current report states why he skipped Szczecin or whether it was a physical precaution. Zárate, by contrast, played as recently as 22 September, making recovery and rhythm the one clear asymmetry between them.
- Meligeni Alves lost 6-3 6-2 to Hugo Dellien in the Genoa Challenger first round on 8 September 2026.
- He was listed as out of the Challenger 125 entry list in Szczecin for the week beginning 14 September 2026.
- No singles match is recorded for him between 9 and 27 September 2026, and four of his last five matches were defeats.

The draw puts an unseeded home player against one of an unusually large Argentine group, with 11 Brazilians and at least nine Argentines in a Challenger 75 on clay at Graciosa Country Club. Because the event is staged in Brazil, crowd support and surface familiarity sit with Meligeni Alves, who has spent most of his recorded career on clay. The depth of the field follows from the event's standing as the best Challenger 75 of the previous year, so neither man opens with a seed's protection. Only about 120 ranking places separate them and both have recent clay match play, so home conditions alone do not separate the two.
- The Curitiba main draw lists Felipe Meligeni Alves against Carlos Zárate in the first round.
- The Challenger 75 in Curitiba begins on 28 September 2026 on the clay courts of Graciosa Country Club.
- The main draw contains 11 Brazilians and at least nine Argentines, and the 2025 edition was named the best Challenger 75 of the year with a $107,000 prize fund.

A protected ranking lets Meligeni Alves enter the main draw of a Challenger 75 directly despite sitting at No. 463, so his place in the draw reflects the level he held before his ranking fell rather than his current results. The protected mark of No. 162 against a career high of No. 117 in April 2025 is the clearest available measure of how far his results have drifted below his established level. That matters for reading this fixture because the entry-list position overstates his present standing, while his recent clay results are the better guide. The limitation is that a protected ranking is an administrative entry and says nothing about his fitness for this week, which no current report establishes.
- Meligeni Alves is listed at No. 162 with a protected ranking on the Curitiba main-draw entry list while his current ranking is No. 463.
- His career-high singles ranking of No. 117 was reached in April 2025.

The Trelew title is Zárate's most recent trophy and shows he can complete a five-match week, which matters because a Challenger 75 first round is a step up in field strength. His two latest clay meetings with Joaquín Aguilar Cardozo both ended in straight-set defeats, most recently 6-2 6-1 on 22 September, so the title sits alongside evidence that he has been outplayed when the level rises. The win establishes current competitive continuity rather than a standard that carries automatically into Curitiba. It also means Zárate arrives with recent match play, unlike his opponent, who has been idle since .
- Carlos María Zárate was named singles champion at the M15 Copa Chubut Deportes, played at Club Trelew, in September 2026.
- He has lost twice in straight sets to Joaquín Aguilar Cardozo on clay in the past month, most recently 6-2 6-1 on 22 September 2026.
