Context last updated 26 Sep 2026, 22:10 · Europe/Bucharest

A first all-Australian WTA final since 2017, and a first meeting between Joint and Birrell.

Joint's 11-of-14 second-set record on hard and a 49-minute semifinal, against Birrell's two three-setters on Saturday, point to her narrowly — but 1.55 to win asks 64.5% and doesn't hold up. Potential value sits with the longer formats and with Birrell: Over 2.5 sets at 2.4, Over 23.5 games at 2.3, Birrell 2-1 at 5.25, Birrell +2.5 games at 1.95, Birrell to win at 2.4.

Context

Court time was uneven: Birrell played roughly four and a half hours across a three-set quarterfinal and a 2h30 semifinal against sixth seed Anna Bondar, while Joint's day was a straight-sets quarterfinal plus 49 minutes before Korneeva retired. That accumulated workload is the most concrete physical difference between the two going into the final. The counterweight is that Joint did not have to close out her semifinal, so her week rests on fewer completed sets than Birrell's, and both women had the same overnight recovery window before the final.
- Rain postponement meant quarterfinals and semifinals were played on the same day.
- Joint spent 49 minutes on court in her semifinal, which ended in a retirement.
- Birrell's semifinal against No. 6 seed Anna Bondar lasted 2 hours 30 minutes.
- Birrell also came from a set down against Katie Volynets in the quarterfinals.

Joint has been the slower starter and the stronger finisher on hard this window, winning 11 of 14 second sets after dropping eight of her 14 openers.
In a best-of-three final that profile points to an opening set that may not go her way and to a three-set match being a live possibility. The window is only 14 matches and covers completed matches only, with one retirement excluded, so it is a tendency rather than a firm rule.
- Completed hard-court matches 30 July to 26 September 2026: 6-8 in first sets and 11-3 in second sets across 14 matches.
- Second sets average 5.5 games won and 4.07 lost; first sets average 4.36 won and 4.79 lost.
- Nine of the 14 matches reached a deciding set, with scorelines of 2-0 four times, 2-1 five times, 1-2 four times and 0-2 once.
- One retirement was excluded from the window.
Birrell has been handing more than six points a match to opponents through double faults, and the rate is slightly higher on hard courts.
If that rate carries into the final, Birrell will be under pressure on her own serve without Joint having to force the issue, which matters in a match where so many recent margins have been a single break. The 10 hard-court matches cover the whole window rather than Seoul alone, so this describes a habit rather than something specific to this week.
- Last 15 matches: 97 double faults (6.5 per match) and 30 aces (2 per match).
- Hard-court split in the same window: 72 double faults across 10 matches (7.2 per match) and 18 aces (1.8 per match).
- The 10 hard-court matches run from 28 July to 26 September 2026.
Neither player has faced the other at tour level, so the final begins without a shared match pattern to work from. The rarity is measurable: the last all-Australian WTA final was Strasbourg 2017, and the previous one on a hard court came in Sydney in January 2005. Both women are also far from home, so the Seoul crowd is unlikely to split clearly in favour of either side. The occasion adds interest rather than an identifiable playing edge.
- No prior tour-level meeting between the two finalists.
- First all-Australian WTA singles final since Strasbourg 2017.
- Last all-Australian hard-court WTA final was Sydney, January 2005.
