Context last updated 27 Sep 2026, 14:58 · Europe/Bucharest

Santiago De La Fuente, No. 724, should get past No.

1576 Boris Arias on the Curitiba clay, but 1.18 asks him to be close to untouchable, and two recent defeats to opponents outside the top 800 do not support that. No reviewed price is worth backing.

Context

Arias's last competitive tennis before this fixture was three doubles matches in Buenos Aires on 23-, ending two days before Curitiba's opening-day schedule, and doubles is the discipline where he holds a top-160 ranking against a singles ranking of No. 1,576. The turnaround asks him to move from an Argentine doubles court to a singles match on clay in Curitiba with one day between the semifinal and this round. The counterpoint is that the Buenos Aires week was the strongest sequence of his recent stretch, with two straight wins before the semifinal, so the load has arrived alongside match sharpness rather than after a layoff.
- Arias and Huertas del Pino lost the Buenos Aires Challenger 75 doubles semifinal 4-6 6-2 [10-7] after holding a 7-5 lead in the match tiebreak.
- The pair beat Garay and Pagani 6-4 6-2 in the first round and Hollender and Meneo 4-6 7-5 [10-3] in the quarterfinals.
- Arias was listed at No. 157 in doubles during that Buenos Aires week.

De La Fuente's clay results in this window are decided quickly in both directions rather than ground out.
Seven of his 14 clay matches ended 2-0 in his favour, so his wins tend to be decisive rather than long. The pattern runs the other way too: four of the 14 ended 0-2 against him, and the sample covers only 16 June to 20 September 2026. Against an opponent who has lost eight of 14 clay matches 0-2, this record points to a short match rather than a drawn-out one.
- Across 14 clay matches from 16 June to 20 September 2026, De La Fuente went 9-5.
- He won 2-0 in seven of those matches, 2-1 in two, and lost 0-2 in four.
- He took the first set in 8 of 14 matches and the second set in 9 of 14.
Arias's clay record in this window is dominated by straight-set defeats rather than narrow losses.
He averaged 3.1 games won against 5.1 lost in first sets, and only one of the 14 matches produced a tiebreak, so the games have usually gone the opponent's way early. Three of the 14 did reach a deciding set, which is the counterweight to the eight 0-2 defeats, and one retired match is excluded from the sample. Against an opponent who has won 2-0 in seven of 14 clay matches, this record suggests Arias needs a fast start he has rarely managed.
- Arias's 14 tracked clay matches from 19 October 2025 to 30 August 2026 finished 3-11.
- He lost 0-2 in eight of those matches and won 2-0 in two, with three matches going to a deciding set.
- He averaged 3.1 games won against 5.1 lost in first sets, with 18.7 total games per match.
- One retired match is excluded from this surface sample.
Curitiba is a clay-court Challenger 75 with a 75-point title and a US$107,000 purse, staged at Graciosa Country Club from 28 September to 4 October, and its main draw is filled with players ranked inside the top 300. Arias and De La Fuente, at No. 1,576 and No. 724, appear in the opening-day schedule a day before that main draw begins, so the fixture sits at the foot of a field whose standard is far above both rankings. The court assignment on Quadra Pedro Amadeu with a 17:30 start puts their meeting in the tournament's first session, on the surface and in the session both men must handle before anything else in the week matters.
- The Arias-De La Fuente fixture is listed on Quadra Pedro Amadeu with a 17:30 scheduled start.
- The Curitiba Challenger 75 is played on the clay of Graciosa Country Club, with qualifying activity from .
- The main draw runs from 28 September to 4 October.
