Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 23 Sep 2026, 11:10 · Europe/Bucharest

Ruse comes in as the fourth seed and the clear favourite, but Ku is the home wildcard who has won the opening set in nine of her fourteen tracked hard-court matches, and Ruse's hard-court evidence is only five completed matches.

Ruse winning in straight sets is the likelier shape. The worthwhile prices sit with Ku: 3.2 to take the first set, 3.2 to take the second and 4.0 to win the match.

Context

Ruse is the fourth seed and the higher-ranked player in this match at No. 66, and she won her Seoul opener 6-1 6-2 over Eva Lys, dropping three games and spending little time on court. That scoreline is the most recent evidence of her level on the outdoor hard courts in Seoul, and the short first round left her a normal two-day turnaround before facing a player ranked 185. The limitation is the opponent: Lys arrived at No. 100 in the middle of a long run of poor results, so the margin reflects her form as much as Ruse's own.
- Fourth seed at the Korea Open, ranked No. 66
- Beat Eva Lys 6-1 6-2 in the Seoul first round, dropping only three games

Elena Gabriela Ruse, 28, is the fourth seed in Seoul and the higher-ranked player in this second-round match at No. 66.
The sample is thin at five matches and one retirement was excluded from it, so this is a shape rather than a rule. Three of those matches were 2-0 wins and two were 0-2 defeats, which means a straight-set finish on its own would not show that Ruse controlled the night. She has won three of five first sets and three of five second sets, so the quick two-set pattern reflects short, decisive matches in both directions.
- Five completed hard-court matches tracked from 3 August to 22 September 2026, with one retirement excluded from the sample.
- All five finished in straight sets: three 2-0 wins and two 0-2 defeats, with no tiebreaks played.
- Average of 16.6 total games per match; first sets won 3-2 and second sets won 3-2.
Yeon Woo Ku, 23, is a Korean wildcard ranked No. 185 and plays this second round at home in Seoul.
Nine first sets and eight second sets won out of fourteen, set against a 7-7 match record over the same stretch, is the contrast worth noting. It describes a player who starts well and has frequently been pulled into long matches rather than closing them quickly, and seven of the fourteen went the distance. The sample covers hard-court matches from 20 June to 22 September 2026 with no retirements excluded, and it makes her opening set the more repeatable part of her game.
- Fourteen completed hard-court matches tracked from 20 June to 22 September 2026, none involving a retirement.
- First sets won 9-5 and second sets won 8-6.
- Scorelines: five 2-0 wins, two 2-1 wins, five 1-2 defeats and two 0-2 defeats, with four matches featuring a tiebreak.
Ku is the home player in this round of 16, a Korean wildcard into the main draw of the Seoul event who beat qualifier Alevtina Ibragimova 6-3 6-2 after three weeks without a competitive match. That result keeps a home player in the draw and gives the round of 16 a local interest that a ranking gap of 119 places does not capture. It also defines the limit of the evidence: the win came against a qualifier, so it shows she can convert a wildcard into a main-draw result rather than measuring her against seeded opposition.
- Korean wildcard in the Seoul main draw
- Beat qualifier Alevtina Ibragimova 6-3 6-2 in the first round
- One of four Korean wildcards to win a first-round match at the event
