Bu Yunchaokete #118China22 – 0Michael Zheng #113United States0

This is the only completed meeting between the two, decided on hard court in New York three weeks before this match, and Zheng won three of the four sets while Bu took the second. One match gives a reference point rather than a pattern of matchup behaviour, and both players arrive here with different preparation behind them. The earlier result therefore frames this fixture without settling it.

Zheng played a four-match, five-day week on hard court in California immediately before this event, arriving in China a few days before his opening match. Bu has been idle since 3 September, so the two arrive with opposite preparation profiles: one match-sharp and travelling, one rested but short of competition. A one-week Challenger schedule is routine at this level and nothing documents how the trip has affected him, so the gap is a scheduling difference rather than a demonstrated handicap.

Bu's strongest result of the season came as a lucky loser at the US Open, where he took out a seeded opponent in straight sets on hard court after being added to the main draw. That is the level he brings into this match and it is a more useful guide to his current form than his ranking. Zheng beat him in the next round of the same tournament, so the win establishes Bu's form rather than any advantage in this matchup.

Zheng's current ranking rests on his first full Grand Slam run, where a wildcard carried him past Fabian Marozsan and Bu into the third round. That moved him inside the Top 100 for the first time, which is why he starts this match as the higher-ranked player. The position is recent and built on a small number of matches in August and September, so the ranking gap between the two is a weaker separator than the numbers alone suggest.
