Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 21 Sep 2026, 09:33 · Europe/Bucharest

Falkowska is 164 places higher but Smith owns the fresher, larger hard-court record — 8-5 in 13 completed matches, all eight wins in straight sets, and a 6-3 6-2 win here on 20 September.

Smith is the pick to reach the main draw, probably in two sets. Of the two quoted prices, only her 2.75 offers anything: it reads about 36% against a 55% chance. Falkowska at 1.44 asks too much.

Context

Smith's opening win gave her current-match exposure on Ankara's hard court, while Falkowska arrived at the final qualifying round without a competitive match at the event. That creates an actual difference in same-venue preparation and workload for this fixture. Smith's match was completed in straight sets, however, and no match-duration or medical information establishes a recovery concern.
- Smith played and won a straight-sets Ankara qualifying match on 20 September, while Falkowska was listed with a bye.

Smith has won eight of 13 completed hard-court matches since mid-June, so the Bandecchi result sits inside an otherwise productive stretch rather than defining it.
Falkowska is 164 places above Smith, and this August result shows how quickly a match can get away from Smith against a higher-ranked opponent: she was shut out in the second set. Smith's 8-5 hard-court record and 51.4% of total points still make her the more reliable hard-court performer in this pairing, so the question is which version turns up.
- 15 August 2026 hard-court loss: 5-7, 0-6 to Susan Bandecchi (No. 143).
- Part of a 13-match completed hard-court sample, 15 June to 20 September 2026, in which Smith went 8-5.
- Eight of those 13 matches were straight-set wins and three were straight-set defeats.
For Smith, two sets has been the norm on hard courts this sample, whether the match ends in a win or a defeat.
Smith's record points to a short match if she is winning, while Falkowska's seven-match hard sample averaged 25.3 games before her clay swing. Falkowska also won six of seven second sets in that small sample, so a longer match is possible, and four of Smith's 13 matches did include a tiebreak.
- 13 completed hard-court matches, 15 June to 20 September 2026: eight 2-0 results, three 0-2 results and two matches that went to a third set.
- Average total games per hard-court match: 20.7.
- Four of the 13 matches contained a tiebreak.
The Ljubljana win supplies the match story behind a recent three-set result: Falkowska reversed a match that Novak had chances to finish and ended a month-long singles wait for a win. It is relevant recent competitive context immediately before Ankara. Falkowska then lost her next match to Laura Samson, so the comeback does not by itself establish a sustained turnaround.
- Falkowska saved three match points against Novak and won after two hours and 45 minutes .
