Context last updated 21 Sep 2026, 10:50 · Europe/Bucharest

Alcalá Gurri is the better clay player and the likely winner, but both men arrive off disrupted schedules: he retired in Seville on 12 September, and Coulibaly had not played since early July before 15 September.

At 1.12 to win the match and 1.18 to take the first set, Alcalá Gurri is priced well beyond his record. Two prices offer something instead — Coulibaly at 5.25 to win the match and 4.25 to win the opening set.

Context

Alcalá Gurri stopped during the Seville semi-final, nine days before this scheduled Plovdiv first round, and has not played since. That week was heavy: he had already won three matches, including a three-hour, 17-minute clay win over Pavel Lagutin. Between two players outside the top 150, whether he can complete a full three-set match is the most concrete open question the stored samples cannot answer. No diagnosis, treatment update, or withdrawal from Plovdiv has been established, so the retirement alone does not prove a continuing physical problem.
- The Seville semi-final ended with Alcalá Gurri retiring while trailing 6-3, 3-0.

Coulibaly's 15 September match at Rennes was his first since retiring in the Troyes quarter-final on 3 July, a gap of more than two months. Plovdiv follows six days later, so this is a second competitive appearance after a long absence rather than a routine tournament-to-tournament transition. He completed the Rennes match, which is a relevant marker for sustained match play. No current report establishes a restriction or gives a medical timetable, so how much competitive load he can carry remains unresolved.
- The Rennes appearance on 15 September was Coulibaly's first official match after an absence of more than two months.
- His preceding match was the 3 July retirement against Calvin Hemery at Troyes.

Alcalá Gurri has been the stronger clay player in this window without being a quick one.
His 9-3 clay record contains four 2-1 wins and one 1-2 loss, so five of 12 matches needed a third set, against five straight-set wins. That sits next to an opponent whose three clay matches from June to early July ran 2-0, 2-1 and 1-2. The sample covers completed, non-retired matches only and omits two retirements, and a three-set habit cuts both ways: it shows he can close long matches, and it leaves more room for an upset than a straight-sets record would.
- Alcalá Gurri: 12 completed clay matches, 14 July–11 September 2026, best-of-three, scorelines of 2-0 five times, 2-1 four times, 1-2 once and 0-2 twice.
- That same sample excludes two retirements.
Coulibaly's small clay sample shows a slow start and a stronger response.
The three matches ended 2-0, 2-1 and 1-2, and he took set 2 in each of them, including a 6-3 second set in a match he lost 1-6, 6-3, 1-6 to Felix Balshaw on 16 June. Set 1 went the other way in two of the three, one of them a 1-6 loss. Three matches is a thin basis for calling that a habit, and the most recent of them finished more than two months before this fixture, so it reads as a split rather than a pattern Alcalá Gurri can rely on either way.
- Coulibaly: 3 completed clay matches, 16 June–2 July 2026, best-of-three, set 1 record 1-2 and set 2 record 3-0.
- Scorelines: one 2-0, one 2-1, one 1-2, with no tiebreaks.
