Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 18 Sep 2026, 22:12 · Europe/Bucharest

Yexin Ma is the deserved favorite over a slumping Carol Zhao, with a far better serve structure and recent form, though her 1.44 price offers no value.

The best angles are Over 21.5 games, Over 2.5 sets and Over 8.5 double faults, driven by Zhao's 6.5 double-faults-per-match rate and both players' tendency toward long, contested matches.

Context

Zhao, 31, is a Canadian right-hander ranked No. 763. She has played most of her career on hard courts, with 168 of her 289 tour-level wins coming on that surface.
Zhao's recent record is the weaker of the two, and her hard-court sample shows she has won just 40% of those matches. Ma's overall and hard-court records are closer to even, which gives her the steadier recent results heading into this qualifying match.
- Zhao is 4-11 in her last 15 matches, a 26.7% win rate.
- Zhao is 4-6 on hard courts in that window, with 47.5% of games won.
- Ma is 7-8 overall and 5-6 on hard courts in her last 15 matches.
- Ma has won 49.1% of games overall in that window, compared to Zhao's 42.4%.
Zhao's career double-fault count is 2,181 across 570 matches, while Ma has 1,791 in 585 matches. Both players have long track records, but Zhao's recent rate is notably higher.
Zhao's 6.5 double faults per match in the last 15 is a clear weakness that gives opponents extra points without requiring a winner. Ma's 2.6 per match is much lower, so if the match stays close, Zhao's serve could be the more vulnerable one under pressure.
- Zhao has averaged 6.5 double faults per match in her last 15 matches.
- Ma has averaged 2.6 double faults per match in the same window.
- Zhao's second-serve points won is 38.6% in the last 15, compared to Ma's 51.1%.
- Zhao's break points saved rate is 58.8%, while Ma's is 47.9%.
The two have met twice before, both times outside hard courts. Zhao won 6-4 6-2 in May 2023 and 6-3 6-3 in July 2025.
The head-to-head record favors Zhao, but both wins came on surfaces other than hard courts, and neither match was close. Ma's recent hard-court form is stronger than Zhao's, so the past results may not carry the same weight on this surface.
- Zhao won the only two completed meetings between the players.
- The 2025 meeting was on grass, and the 2023 meeting was on carpet.
- Zhao won both matches in straight sets.
- Ma has not won a set in the head-to-head.
The match is Korea Open qualifying on a hard court in Seoul, scheduled on Show Court 1 after the preceding match. Qualifying means the winner advances toward the main draw, and the hard court keeps the rallies and serving conditions in a familiar outdoor setting for both players.
- The match listing identifies Korea Open qualifying in Seoul, on a hard court, with Show Court 1 assigned.

Ma's stronger recent form and serve structure are real, but the quoted price already overstates her edge, so this is a fair-to-slightly-negative position rather than a value bet.

The read
Ma's clearly stronger recent form, better serve/return structure and far lower double-fault rate over a fully covered 15-match window outweigh Zhao's 2-0 H2H, which is dated (2023, 2025) and predates Zhao's current 4-11 slump.
- Last-15 overall: Ma 7-8 (46.7% matches, 49.1% games) vs Zhao 4-11 (26.7% matches, 42.4% games), both windows fully tracked (15 matches).
- Hard-court last-15: Ma 5-6 with 47.8% games and 43.5% return points won (11 matches tracked) vs Zhao 4-6 with 47.5% games but only 41.5% second-serve points won (10 matches tracked).
- Serve structure: Ma 2.8 aces/match and 2.6 DF/match vs Zhao 1.5 aces and 6.5 DF/match over the same 15-match window.
- Ranking baseline: Ma 174 vs Zhao 763; Zhao's last-5 form is 0-5 with a retirement (6-2 4-1 ret. vs Xiaodi You, May 2026).

Zhao's 2-0 H2H and Ma's narrow recent game margins make a +3.5 game cushion for Zhao a reasonable cover even in defeat.
