Elina Avanesyan

Armenia

The WTA lists hard as Avanesyan’s favourite surface and No. 36 as her career-high ranking. She returned to competition in 2026 after a mononucleosis-related absence reported in April; that older issue is not treated as an active fitness concern here.

Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 13 Sep 2026, 15:56 · Europe/Bucharest

Riera holds a slight edge over Avanesyan based on better recent hard-court form and first-serve effectiveness.

The match is likely to be competitive with many games, making Riera to win and over 21.5 total games the best betting angles.

Context

Riera, 147th, is a clay-court specialist with 221 career clay wins compared to 52 on hard courts.
Her last-15 hard-court sample shows a 50% win rate, but first-serve percentage falls to 50.2% and double faults rise to 5.8 per match. That is a small sample, but it suggests her serve is less reliable on this surface.
- Last 15 on hard: 2-2 record, 50.2% first serve in, 5.8 double faults per match.
- Career hard-court record: 52 wins vs 221 on clay.
Avanesyan, 159th, has built her ranking mainly on clay, with 157 career clay wins.
Her only recent hard-court match was a straight-set loss to Andrea Lazaro Garcia, where she won just 29.6% of second-serve points. With no other hard-court data in the window, her level on this surface is uncertain.
- Last 15 on hard: 0-1 record, 29.6% second-serve points won.
- Career hard-court record: 46 wins vs 157 on clay.
Both players have been active on clay in recent weeks, with Riera winning 9 of 11 clay matches and Avanesyan 11 of 14.
Their overall records are identical at 11-4, but the surface switch to hard courts makes that form less predictive. Neither has enough recent hard-court evidence to be confident about their level here.
- Riera last 15 overall: 11-4, with 9-2 on clay.
- Avanesyan last 15 overall: 11-4, with 11-3 on clay.
The São Paulo event is a 32-player WTA 250 on hard courts, so this first-round match carries one ranking point for the loser and 30 for the winner. That modest immediate stake does not change the surface or form questions already covered.
- São Paulo is scheduled for September 14-20 as a WTA 250 with a 32-player singles draw.
- The event sits on the hard-court swing, with 1 point for the first round and 30 for the second round.
