Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 30 Aug 2026, 03:46 · Europe/Bucharest

Squire's superior recent form and return game make him the likely winner, but Jianu's H2H win and resilience keep it competitive.

Best angles: Over 21.5 total games and Jianu +3.5 game handicap. Avoid backing Jianu outright despite the tempting odds.

Context

Jianu, 25, is a Romanian right-hander ranked 265. He has a career win percentage of 58.3% but has struggled with physical issues in recent weeks.
Jianu retired from his last match against Robert Guna after losing the first set 6-4 and trailing 1-0 in the second. He also retired in matches on July 29 and July 21. These retirements raise questions about his current fitness and ability to sustain a full match, which could be a significant factor if the match goes long.
- Jianu retired on August 27 vs Robert Guna (6-4 1-0 ret.).
- Jianu retired on July 29 vs Stefan Horia Haita (5-2 ret.).
- Jianu retired on July 21 vs Norbert Gombos (4-3 ret.).
Squire, 26, is a 196cm right-hander from Germany ranked 214. He has a career clay win percentage of 55.6% and has been more consistent on clay in recent weeks.
Squire's recent clay record is 8-6 over his last 14 matches, compared to Jianu's 4-9 over 13. Squire also holds a slight edge in return points won on clay (39.5% vs 35.6%) and has a higher first-serve points won percentage (68.4% vs 66.4%). However, Jianu's overall clay career is stronger, so this is a moderate form edge rather than a decisive one.
- Squire's last 15 clay matches: 8 wins, 6 losses (57.1% win rate).
- Jianu's last 13 clay matches: 4 wins, 9 losses (30.8% win rate).
- Squire's clay return points won: 39.5%; Jianu's: 35.6%.
The two players have met once before, on clay at a Challenger event in 2025.
In that match, Jianu won comfortably in straight sets. He served at 80% first serves and won 77% of first-serve points, while Squire struggled with 38 unforced errors and only 30% return points won. That result gives Jianu a psychological edge, but it is over a year old and Squire's current form is better.
- H2H: Jianu leads 1-0, winning 6-4 6-2 on clay in May 2025.
- In that match, Jianu had 80% first serves and 77% first-serve points won.
- Squire had 38 unforced errors and 30% return points won.

Markets to Avoid

High-risk markets where price or context leaves too little cushion.

Jianu's recent form and clay metrics are significantly worse than Squire's, making the underdog price a trap despite the H2H win.
